Re: what tach ?

I have the 5" standard Autometer with shiftlight mounted on the lower screw for the windshield piller. It's face matches the other gauges perfectly and it lay's just on top of the dash.

Thats my personal favorite. 3.75 inch, 8000 RPM. Also comes in chrome as well.

A huge tach that goes to 10,000-11,000 RPM is useless to me. The needle will never reach a large portion of the face, and you end with a needle that barely moves in most driving situations that ends up being harder to read.

Good thing Autometer/Autogage still makes a 5 inch 8000 RPM monster tach though.

Re: what tach ?

I got an old SunPro too, also in the 8k range, it sits under the dash, and actually don't look like it don't belong there:

A factory tach is indeed nice, but won't do squat for anyone who is running a modified engine or has a performance truck...as the max readout is 5000 RPM.

Re: what tach ?

How about running a stock tach that has been reworked by United Spedometer? They should be able to rework the "stocker" to read higher than 5000 rpm. I have seen some of their work, it's tight!

Re: what tach ?

I remember years back when a friend of mine installed the speedo and tach from a late 70 Camero in place of the factory tach and speedo. Looked factory...

Re: what tach ?

I put mine in my ash tray. had to do a bit of trimming and then just made an aluminum face to cover the rest of the hole. even left the cigarette lighter in the same location. I know you wanna see pics.... but for some reson I don't have any...yet!!

Re: what tach ?

If you are building a torque motor, 5k is fine. Read the specs on Crane Cam's MPG series of camshaft, they float the valves @5,500rpm, so a redline of 5k is actually reasonable in that case.

are the hole in the aluminum plate the same size as in the stock trim behind it? I was thinking about doing that with my stock bezel but wasn't sure that the gauges would be big enough to fit all the way around the cut outs.

Re: what tach ?

Yep pretty much, I think he left a little more of the back than mike did, he can sit for hours on end tinkering with stuff until he gets what he wants - must have got that from my wife - lol.
Neverfinished - I think its a larger opening I know he burned up my dremel cutting it out, I think he has to enlarge the opening on the chrome plates to.

His are surface mounted, Mikes are recessed. Here is a link to surface mounted gauges.

Re: what tach ?

jeff my son hollowed the backing so the gauges would not jump around so much and not rely so much of the surface mount holding them in place. The white backing is still there to fasten the bezel, and he did not do as much cutting to the bezel as shown on mike write-up.
