newb here 1st question

Hi guys!
I picked up a 49 chev stepside the other day. I have always wanted a classic truck. It needs tons of work and i'll be learning as I go. I have been working on classic motorcycles for the past 3 years. It's time to turn my attention to this truck. There are way to many blue hairs here in Florida for me to feel safe riding them on the street.
I really don't know anything about these old trucks. Except that I like em.
Got a question though.... I don't see a VIN number anywhere.. How do I know what options this truck came with? Origanal motor, color etc... I read somewhere on here that the 49 and 50 are the same. That's all I know.
Thanks

Re: newb here 1st question

The Vin number on my dad's 52 is on the drivers door post on a little tag riveted to the post. I can't tell you anything about the options but if you look on the menu page for the 47-59 forum there is a post for shop manuals and maybe something might be in there.

What is the plan stock or Hot Rodded? What kind of budget are you starting with? Do you have a good paint and body shop that you deal with?

Re: newb here 1st question

Thanks guys.
I'm thinking Hot Rodded. It doesn't have to be perfect. It can stay primer color and i'd be happy..lol My neighbor is a body/paint guy. He's done the paint on my motorcycles. Extra Money is sporatic so i'll be doing a little at a time. My first focus is going to be the drivetrain, brakes and motor. I want to make it safe. I was told the motor is froze up but haven't checked yet.

Thanks

Re: newb here 1st question

Any pics? This site is a wealth of knowledge. There is plenty of your ?'s answered if you use the search tool. The 47-55 1st series pick ups were called "Advanced Design". 54-551st have a few more noticable differences then the prior years. Some trucks came with the "Nu Vue" or 5 window package. Some came with wind wings. If you fallow some of the large build threads and ask ?'s of those who are ahead of you, you'll lean much. I bought a book called "Chevrolet Pickups" by Mike Mueller and another called "Chevrolet Pickups 1946-1972" by John Gunnell. Both are very informative and have good examples/pics of restored trucks. Look forward to seeing you truck.
