Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
Haven't bought a car stereo in 20 years (Bear with me -- I'm old ). So, what will I need to run a simple system in my truck? How much is too much? Here are some wishes:
* I have holes cut in my dorrs already (PO, not me) * I want to tuck the stereo away in the glove box * I want to run my MP3 player and don't really care about CD's, radio, etc. * It has to be able to be heard over the noise in the cab Figured you all would have suggestions about an OK stereo/amp/sub/speaker combo for me. Thanks ahead of time for the assistance.

Re: Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
if you figure out what size speakers/amp you want, I can get you a killer deal on infinity products. close to 1/2 off.
PM me if interested

Re: Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
My suggestion:
Pioneer 3400 (or above) deck RF command reciever (can't remeber the company that makes it. Probably Pioneer also...) Infinity Kappa speakers for the doors Pioneer Shallow mount sub woofers matched with a zapco amplifier. When you ask "How much is too much?" you're leaving alot of room there. Some people say that there is no limit. Others are happy with modest means. Keeping it simple, you can place the deck inside the glove box and use the command module I mentioned to control it. Since the doors are already cut, find what will fit and install a nice set of either coaxial or component speakers. For the subs and amp, I'd go with the Pioneer 8" shallow mount subs and would probably place them under the seat(s) in their own boxes and then make a very simple amp rack for behind the seat. I'd reccomend a Zapco amp for their smaller size and quality. Have you ever considered applying Dynamat to the interior of the truck? lining the doors with the stuff will do wonders for the cabin noise. If you tell me your budget, I can make product reccomendations that are more specific.

Re: Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
Thanks all. Seems like I have a different budget every day. I have quotes that vary up to $1000, but was hoping to spend about half that, not including install, which I hope to be able to do myself (with some help from the board, of course). I had thought about the Dynamat, and one of the guys I was talking to at the car stereo place mentioned it as well.
The holes cut in my doors measure about 5 inches. Below is what I am working with in the interior. First is speaker hole, then behind the seat on the passenger side. Then behind the seat on the driver side (Obviously I can't put anything there).

Re: Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
last summer i put an alpine 9857 in my wifes car and it's amazing. you can find one for less than $200 since its last years model, and it has all the upgrade options you could ever want. Sat radio, Ipod controls, HD radio, etc.
Since you already have holes in the doors, I'd install some 5.25", or 6.5" components, there. PM sent

Re: Where to start? Need to build my shopping list
You could save a few pennies by going to a lower end deck, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the 5900. I feel it has the best balance of adjustablity, quality, and ease of use.
I can't seem to find that control module I mentioned, but I'm going to call a buddy of mine tommorrow who installed one on a car a few weeks ago. He'll know where to find it. If you can spring for it, get a few small bits of Dynamat and place a little behind each speaker. Probably 1ftsq behind each speaker will do, just to keep the echoing inside the doors to a minumum.
