Original "Shop Manuals" - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've seen "Original Shop Manuals" and/or "Unit Repair Manuals" for sale here and there on the net, ebay and car sites ets. In particular, the ones I'm wondering about are the ones for particular year model vehicles, such as 1984 Light Duty Pickups. They appear to be books put out by GM, have seen prices from $25 to $90 for them depending on the site or condition. Just wondering if anyone knows if you get more info in these than the over the counter Haynes or Chiltons books. Like wiring diagrams for example, I would assume they would be less generic and more specific in the original GM shop manual.

Have occasionally seen them specifically for my year model truck but hesitate to fork out the extra $$ without finding out if it's worth it.

I just received in the mail yesterday a 1984 Chevrolet Light Duty Truck (C10-30) Shop Manual. It is about 3 inches thick. It has wiring diagrams, troubleshooting guides, and a lot of illustrations. By far more superior and detailed than any Haynes or Chilton manual. I got it via an Ebay auction for $35.99 plus $5 postage. You got to be patient though using Ebay as they come up once in a while, with a lot of bidders. You got to using the sniping technique during the last 30 seconds of the bidding.

Thanks for the review. That's what I suspected, gonna pick one up next time I run across one. Yep, done the ebay thing a couple of times buying band and PA equipment. Know what you mean about the last 30 seconds.

I got all the factory service manuals new from www.helminc.com, but I can't find them there now.

I got mine from Ebay as well. I got a heck of a deal for $5.00 plus shipping. I also have seen them at ChevyDuty's magazine as well.

The GM Manuals are the way to go, they are much more detailed. Price varies, I have paid 25-35 for like new ones. Worth every penny IMO.
HELM is still around but they have gotten crazy with thier prices.

I bought my Helm's (GM) manual from Helm's. I think I paid 60 bucks for it. Worth every penny. It gets into detail Chiltons or Haynes could only think of. As a matter of fact, they use bits and pieces from the Helm's manual. I've read the same things in both, but nowhere near as complete. Maybe the author was the same person.

The factory manuals cover every aspect of these trucks. Nothing left to guess about. If it's for something stock, it's in there.

So, if you are serious about your truck, the GM factory manuals are the way to go for sure.

Off of ebay, I've bought GM wiring diagrams, unit repait manuals, and shop manuals.
Only thing I haven;t bought are the assembly manuals, but I'm looking.
