Tailgate Band Restoration
Does anyone here know how to get dings out of a tailgate band without completely destroying it? How would you separate the outside skin from the inner without tearing it up?
Also, what would be the proper thing to use to get the dings out once inner and outer structure have been separated? A body hammer and dolly? Brass hammer and piece of wood? These bands are expensive to buy new as everyone knows. I have one real good used one but it has a couple of dings in it that I want to repair, then buff it out with my powerball. One more thing, what kind of black paint should be used around the outside edge where it's painted? Thanks guys. ...Joe

Re: Tailgate Band Restoration
I have 3 used ones.I am going to attempt to straighten the worst one first and see what happens. Man these things are well over $400 new. I could have gotten one for $250 from my buddy down at my local Chevrolet dealership but GM has discontinued them.
So I'm going to try to make one of these work before I consider buying a new one. And there's always the swap meets. Might get lucky and find a perfect one someday! ...Joe

Re: Tailgate Band Restoration
Do not strike it directly with anything or you will damage the finish. I would try using a block of smooth wood on the inside and lay it on a very smooth surface. Hammer against the wood surface and see how it goes.
BTW- Those can be bought as reproductions.

Re: Tailgate Band Restoration
I Knocked A Few Dents Out Of Mine, All Were Along The Edges So I Did Not Have To Remove The Rear Support Channel. I Did What N2truk Said And Used A Couple Pieces Of Wood To Smooth It Out, It Is Not Perfect But Better Than What I Started With And My Truck Is Just A Driver.
OH BTW I HAVE LIKE 4 EXTRAS IN MY ATTIC, COUPLE GMC'S AND A COUPLE CHEVY'S ALL WITH SOME PROBLEMS
