"K" case transmissions

This might be better in the Engine/Tranny forum but I'll start here.
I've heard of "K" case transmissions before but not sure what the differences are.
I was pulling the bad tranny (700r4) out of my '86 shortbed 4x4 today and noticed it has a "K" cast into the case near the front, on the driver side. It also has a tag that says "Remanufactured for GM".

I was going to have this one rebuilt eventually and put in my long bed. Just wondering if I lucked out and found something real nice.
It does need a rebuild though...

That's an easy question..."K" case means a 4wd..from the "K" series pickup,which is the 4wd line.Some have them,some I've seen dont.I've heard the torque convertor/flexplate cover is different on the "k" case trannys than the 2wd versions but I havent confirmed anything...Rare--no.

I've heard that the K case is stronger. If the trans was being custom built, could a 2WD output and tail shaft be used to make a stronger transmission ? I've heard that the K case was stronger but it was not clear if it could be used for 2WD builds as well.

What I've heard is that the K cases are a stronger tranny and have heard of 2wd K case trannys too.
Locally a guy advertises rebuilt tranny's; not sure if he represents a shop or just does it as a side job. He advertises rebuilt 700r4's for $850 and had a 2wd K case for $1295. Can't find that add right now though.
