backspacing

is a backspacing of 6 or higher in a 20" wheel ok with any truck from 67-72 or 88-98 i have 5.25 for the front of my 88 and the back wheel is 6.25. i was told they fit fine in another 88-98 truck. when are spacers used and usually for what size of backspacing to get where?
