Spare tire cover?

What originally covered the spare tire on my '72 GMC Suburban? Is there a hard cover, similar to the plastic rear side panels, or a soft cover?

Re: Spare tire cover?

The info I have shows that they were all black vinyl from the factory, no matter what the interior color or trim level. I ended up using one that you would normally see on a Jeep outside spare tire--vinyl, all black, and you can find them at most parts stores. I think the main difference is that the stock one slipped over the top of the tire and was open at the bottom (mine fits around the whole tire).

Re: Spare tire cover?

my cover slips over, but it is cream, not black? I have never looked into it, but I think it is original.

Re: Spare tire cover?

Chevy454, I have that vinyl piece in my Burb also, believe it is supposed to tuck behind the spare as a filler panel.

Chevy454, I have that vinyl piece in my Burb also, only cream. Full marks to grebus1 because I finally got off my but and pulled the cover out of the box, and it is black.
