327 on a Muncie 465

Greetings all,
I got a hold of TWO great fleet sides. A 65' and a 66'. The 66 is slammed and has a great blocking job on the body. It has a factory 6 cyl and a muncie 465 trany. The 65 is complete but a little rough, and it has a 327 with a gear drive. and a three speed.
I'm seriously wanting to swap the 327 into the 66 and I'm having a little trouble finding interchange info on the compatibility of the trany/flywheel/bell housing of the muncie with the 327.
Any thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken the Muncie 465 wasn't applicable until 1968 and it has a bigger spline shaft diameter. A good tranny for your 327 would be a Muncie 420. Some of the more experienced guru's in here can probably verify whether I right or wrong because I have been researching the same problem with a 283 in my 65 gmc. I hope this is true and it helps you with your problem.

I might be wrong on the number, it is the original four speed with the granny low (1'st) The drive line is in stellar condition, but I was wondering if it's going to be "happy" with a V8 as well as being able to bolt up without a but load of work.

I think you'll have to make some rear end changes or you'll never get highway speeds out of it.

SO, I think I've got the 420. I don't think changing the rear gears will be necessary, the trany ratio(s) are 7.0/1 3.6/1 1.7/1 1/1 I have to research the gear code for the rear to make sure, but it should be ok for 70 mph +/-.
I can't seem to find info on if I have to change the flywheel, it seems that the bell housing is not an issue
Has anyone swapped out the 6 with a V8 on this unit?.

I have swapped a straihgt six and v8 like that. Bolts right up. but Motor mounst are different on one side. Also make sure you use the bellhousing that goes with the tranny. When changing from sm420 to sm 465 the hole in the bell housing is larger on the sm465 one, also the sm 465 is about an inch and a half longer that the sm420 and the u-joint yoke is different!

For what it's worth, I've got a 420 on my '64, with a 283. It works well with it and I think it'd be good for something with a thicker powerband too. It's a bit of a reach from 3rd to 4th, but if you had more torque, it be better.
