i have a 68 i was told that you could use the front spindules off a 85 or older should work but the guy before converted it to a 3/4 ton can i just change out the ball joints or do i need the hole a arm ?

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! When he converted it to 3/4 ton did he change the control arms or just the spindles?

About the only difference between 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks are the springs, spindles, and rear axles. If you're wanting to convert to 1/2 ton 5 bolt then swap in 1/2 ton springs, spindles. Of course you'll have to change the rear end to 5 bolt too if you want it to match. Pretty simple swap. You don't HAVE to change the front crossmember but a lot of guys do.
