Custom dash

I could not really find any threads that had any substance to them, so i thought I would ask the question!

Has anyone started from scratch and built a custom dash. If so, what materials did you use? Metal, fiberglass, wood, carbon fiber, any combination of the previous?

We are rebuilding our 72 from the ground up and the OEM interior does not really do anything for me any more. We are planning a subwoofer enclosure that will replace the in-cab gas tank. A center console will go from there up to the dash. It would be nice to redo the dash as well. We bought a 2003 Silverado SS as our donor vehicle and it has a nice interior. We will use the seats and a lot of other parts from the interior. The gauge cluster is nice as well and I will try to incorporate that, in addition to the steering column and wheel (minus airbag) into the 72.

I have used glass before but it can be a pain after a while. My question again is has anyone done a complete or partial dash replacement? If so, what did you do and do you have any pics? Please elaborate on materials, etc... Are there any companies that make replacements for the 67-72? I have seen a myriad of units however none for my specific truck.

Thanks!

Re: Custom dash

On this site, we have seen over the years...50's style Impala, Bel Air, even a non gm brand dash being rigged to be put in this era of truck. Also, people have put in the 95+ dashes out of the newer trucks, and I am sure there are more than that out there. Trevor

Re: Custom dash

Our donor truck is a 2003 Silverado and the dash is in great condition. Will that dash even come close to fitting? It would be nice to get that dash into the truck!

Re: Custom dash

Oops sorry, I thought you meant scratch built dash. Not sure on the donor dash, I think someone did a 99ish dash a while back & it was a couple inches too narrow...

Re: Custom dash

If the 03 dash is to narrow you could always add extentions to the doors and paint the dash for a really sweet look!

Re: Custom dash

You were right about the scratch built dash. That is what I had in mind before I thought about using the 03 dash. I will entertain both options and see where it goes...

Re: Custom dash

Sorry, can't contribute pics, but sure am interested in watching this thread. I'm redoing my 69's interior.

Like you I want a custom look, have put Subs where the gas tank was, have '03 Chevy truck seats and am doing a center console blending into a custom dash.

I probably won't cut the old dash out. Most likely will use it as a base and add some curves to soften the dash's straight and hard lines. Playing with the idea of using a shapely manequin as a base mold for my center console. It would blend into the sub enclosure and the dash, but nothing's final.

Good luck on yours.

mnunn454:

I think you and I are on the same page with the interior build. Like you, I want to build the sub enclosure behind the seat, blend a center console and utilize the factory metal dash as a base, or skeleton, to build on. I have the seats, etc.. out of our donor 2003 Silverado.

Now comes a little MDF, fiberglass and welding...
