Hot Rod Black Paint!??

I was thinking of painting my truck "hot rod" black wich is between flat and gloss black. It's a satin black for those of you who haven't seen it. It will be roughly $2000 or so to do all the body work and paint the exterior and interior. $3000 or so for body work with gloss black paint. This is a truck I will driving pretty regularly. I was told a satin black would be easier to maintane. Gloss requires a lot cleaning, waxing, etc.

What do you think considering the price and purpose of my truck.

I will also be adding 20s but not in chrome. They will be either grey or black. I am also going to paint my grill gloss black.

What do you think?

Anyone have any pictures of "hot rod" black trucks or does anyone own one?

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

I really like that look on a truck. There has been a couple of threads a while ago about that type of finish. They say it doesn't last as long as a gloss finish.I'm sure someone with explain.I also like using aluminum acessorys rather than chrome.I'm leaning toward going with the factory color on my truck but with a flat finish(silver/pewter).Or maybe a red .Years ago I had a old ford truck that was flat purple. Also I'm tired of keeping my fleet clean and polished.I won't drive or ride a dirty vehicle. So if one is a bit easier to maintain it will be welcome.3 vehicles and 4 V-twins, 3 with gobs of chrome.I'm busy.LOL

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

Well we have used "hot rod flatz" paint on projects and have never had a problem with it.. But this a actual flat paint, not to chalk up and all the problems you have with black primers. Give them a call, they are very helpfull.

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

If you buy the true hotrod black paint, it lasts but it is expensive, probably just as much a good base/clear paint job. Unless I had something like a 33 Ford, I wouldn't consider giving it the rat rod look, especially for a daily driver. Most hotrod black paint jobs I see look cool at first but within a couple of months, it's chalky, faded, and nasty looking.

In my opinion, clear coat is clearly tougher and easier to take care of. It stays glossy. Just give it a wax here and there, give it the clay bar once a year, and it's good to go. Whoever told you flat black is easier to take care off lied. If you get grease on the paint, it will stain. If you get grease on clear coat, it just wipes right off. I know in the Texas sun, single stage paint jobs don't last long.

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

The OP was asking about satin finish.Which different than flat as we all know.I would think a satin would be less work.Just wash and go.I pretty sure they make a satin or semi gloss clear?

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

I see that as a temporary solution rather than a permanent one. Maybe you see it differently.

I have heard that the semi gloss is more work to maintain, but I don't know. My truck is satin blue, thanks to a cheap paint job and the Texas sun, and it stains. Like someone else said, grease is hard to clean off (I usually use wax or Simple Green).

A lot of the hotrod guys use John Deere Blitz Black. I think it is under $50 per gallon at the John Deere dealer, and available in spray cans in case you need to touch it up. It has a nice satin finish, not flat black, and it is a paint rather than a primer.

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

Hot rod black is $130 per gallon (stage 1 with activator)

Again it is a satin black not a flat black primer color.

I dont now much about paint but at this price this paint better NOT FADE and it better last!

I like the idea as long as what I was told is true. LOW MAINTENANCE!

I like the glossy chrome trucks but I dont have that kind of cash to flash. I'm looking for more so mean and tough than pretty and shiney. Any other input on this unique satin 'Hot Rod Black' Paint?

Anyone used it?

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

$130 per gallon isn't expensive as far as paint goes.

Have you looked into any of the articles on rolling on $30 per gallon rustoleum? You thin it out a lot, roll it on with a foam roller, apply a bunch of coats, then buff it out. It is a lot of work, bust can be done for around $100 excluding bodywork.

Re: Hot Rod Black Paint!??

uuuuuh I appreciate the input but to me that just doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm looking to spend a good chunk on body work so I dont think any rustoleum would be coming near my truck. I'm not really looking for a cheap get buy paint job. I'm looking for a nice looking, low maintenance, tough, good quality color. Not so much cheap and easy but nice and reasonable.
