New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
Bought a '69 C20 Camper Edition a couple months ago, sold my '05 Silverado so this is now my daily driver. Truck has a GM crate 350 with 40k, and TH400 with unknown k ho52 rearend. First thing I did to this thing was new belts and hoses, HEI with new plugs/wires, new filters. Truck runs great and fires up pretty well, but seems to have a bit of a flat spot in initial acceleration and diesels a bit when I shut it off. Currently have the timing at 12*. Basically my plans for the truck are to daily drive it (bout 7 miles either way) and use it to tow my rock crawler out to the desert every so often. Plans for now are:
Install tow hitch, trailer wiring, trailer brake Disc brakes in the front and new master cyl. Add aftermarket tranny cooler & get a temp guage Add a tach that'll work with HEI Add a stereo so I'm not driving in silence That'll about do it for now, but I'm sure I'll be doing more to it later (already thinking about getting a 383 stroker in there and rebuilt TH400 w/ shift kit). Seems like to get the disc brakes and keep it 8 lug, the only thing I can do is swap in the entire crossmember, suspension, brakes from a later model 3/4 ton. This right? Is it now possible to get some drop spindles that'll accept discs or something? There's got to be an easier way it seems like. Also, how can I tell if the tranny has the overdrive on it or not. I don't think it does, but also have no idea what to look for. Love the truck so far, and glad I found this board there is a ton of great info here... |

Another of the interior. I don't think this truck has any rust on it at all. Not bad for $2k I don't think

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
$2200 to be exact, but I jumped on it as soon as I saw it. It seems really clean. These trucks are so simplistic that I figure as long as the engine, tranny and rear axle are in good shape I have no worries. Just want to get it set up to tow right now, and not sure if I really want to tow another vehicle on a trailer with drums in the front We'll see though.... I have a lead on a crossmember/front susp/motor mounts out of a '90 3/4ton suburban for $200. Is that a pretty decent deal?

Nice truck. Looks like what mine would have looked like from the factory.
Enjoy it...

You must have bought it at gunpoint. That is a very nice looking truck for the price.

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
that's a sharp truck there.
If it has a TH400, it isn't overdrive. None of them were. Your flat spot and dieseling are probably related. Either too much timing (12 deg isn't too much if the advance is working properly) or your carb is a bit lean. Either one can cause both symptoms. If the truck is from a higher elevation than you are at, I would suspect the carb being lean. 99% of the tachs out there will work with HEI... even the stock ones. |

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
sir, you stole that truck! $2k is insanely low. want to see some rust? go look under the battery tray and reach around in the rear cab corners
(not saying you'll find it, but those seem to be the hotspots I've found on 99.9% of all trucks)

Seriously? You got that for $2200? Argh!!! you know what's around up here? Beat up ranch trucks and tree planters going for $3000 with no engine or tranny... Color me green with envy - that's a gorgeous truck!

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
Thanks guys... I'll check under the battery trays and cab corners tonight after work just to see. Who knows, the PO may have just painted over everything. Also planning on making the mixture a little richer to see if that gets rid of my issues, thanks for the tip.

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
Very true on the battery tray, I thought My truck had no rust until I changed the battery. Then the tray fell apart came out in multiple pieces, the inner fenderwell was also rusted under the battery look under the fenderwell. I also noticed on some trucks I looked at the cab mounts were rusted, all are easy fixes

Nice truck.
Did you change your fuel filter? My pardner's '66 Volvo was acting like that and I found a clogged fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump. If you have a Rochester Quadrajet, the filter is in the front of the carb where the fuel line enters. .

Re: New to the board... opinions on my setup ok, or just look...
On my 68 C20 I swaped everything but the crossmember with an 84. If you use the orig. crossmember you can use the mounts for the brake hoses on the back of the crossmember. The drum brake hoses will screw right in the calipers. The newer style route to the front. My 68 and 84 crossmember are exactly the same except the 68 has a hose mount on the rear of the crossmember. all the bolt holes were exactly the same.
