How do you separate the two driveshafts????
Anybody know if there is an easy way to just pull out the rear half of a two piece driveshaft? I would like to leave the carrier bearing and front half in place.
I am swapping an Eaton with a 12 bolt, and the u-joint size is different, but it looks like I could just use the rear half of the 12 bolt driveshaft. The length appears to be exactly the same. Do these come apart pretty easy? Thanks in advance... |

unbolt from diff, and pull. If it doesn't slip right off, then something is way wrong.

you can try pumping grease in the zerk fitting, that'll obviously lube it, and it *should* push the two apart a bit too.

Mine has a bolt in the center of the middle yoke behind the u-joint. I had two press it apart.

if it's bolted, how does the slip shaft slip?

Re: How do you separate the two driveshafts????
The slip yoke may have a collar on the end of it. You may need to unscrew the collar. If it is a 4 speed trans the slip yoke will be between the shafts, if it from a 3 speed or an auto the slip will be in the tailshaft of the trans. If the slip is in the trans oneof the shafts will have the yoke bolted on the end of the shaft.

woah... I ALWAYS forget about that... thanks!
On the longhorns, there is a slip yoke on the tranny AND a slip shaft on the 2 shafts. No bolt. I automaticly picture that set up. Although... I didn't have to remove a bolt on the burb when I pulled the shaft out of it... |

1/2 one shaft 1/2 the other should get you on the road, but will no doubt give you a vibration. 2 piece driveshafts need to be balanced as an assembly.

Re: How do you separate the two driveshafts????
Thanks everybody for the advice and the saved potential vibration. I picked up a NAPA #348 Conversion U-joint and it worked great. My truck is back on the road and I'm loving the 12 bolt with a 3.08 rear end ratio!
Next week I'm swapping a non-original 3/4 ton 8 bolt front end with the 5 lug 1/2 ton set up from the same truck I got the 12 bolt out of. Hopefully you all will have some good tips for that one. Will it even work? |
