Question Catalytic converter

I plan to replace my exhaust in a couple of weeks. The catalytic converter on there has an air tube but it's capped off. The truck didn't come with an air pump from the factory. So, the new converter I get doesn't need an air tube correct? Thanks!

that should be correct. when i replaced the cat on my now non-existant exhaust it didnt have an a tube on it. but....now with no cats i dont have to worry about it..

and welcome to the board... pretty darn good guys....and gal(s) around here..with load of info to share...

It sounds like someone has put another cat on. The stock cats didn't have the tube. All you need to get is a regular 3 way cat. I recommend a high flow model. Steer clear of the factory cats. They are expensive and don't flow very well. I would go with a 3" in/out cat for best performance.

Try a Catgo (?) from Summit Racing. I have one and it does fairly well. It was easy to blow out too. Yes it was accident.

Good question. I have been meaning to ask the same. I have the A.I.R. system on my truck and keeping it when I do my exhuast (not by choice, by law). So when I get a cat I need to get one without the little tube?

I think 84 (83?) and older do not need cats. I didn't on mine.

Heres another question. Should I have the cat welded in place?
Should I have the muffler welded in place?
If I didnt have you guys to ask Id weld the cat in place and bolt the muffler. Just case I need to change mufflers later for some reason. What do you guys think is the best?

the easiest thing, and best way of doing it is what I'm going to do, as soon as I get my distributor back. I bought some Summit header collectors, 3" in my case. I have all my stuff welded to stop leaks. Well as you know, I can't remove anything without cutting if off. When I drop the y-pipe, it will only go as far as the crossmember. I going to have the collectors added in front of the cat so I can take it apart and remove the y-pipe. You could also add these to the muffler inlet just as easy. Clamping the tailpipe just don't cut it. It will still leak and you can't get it off very easy either.

i am wondering if the cat is what is what is wrong with my truck. i got under it the other day and hit the exhaust and i could hear the cat rattle. it aint but about 2-3 years old. i wonder if that is where all the problems are stemming from.

I've looked at summitt site & the Catco converters. The three I came up with to get are CTO-6906, 8006, 9006. The first one is 14" long the other two are 16.5". The aftermarket cat I have on there now is 16.5" long. From what I read the difference in the 8006 & 9006 is one has an air tube. Summitt tech said CTO-6906. I called a couple muffler shops around here that carry Catco & the tell me CTO-9006. They said the 6906 is like a stock cat & the 9006 is High efficient. I'm leaning towards the 8006. What do you guys think?

Is that a state law? I thought that all trucks after 78 had to have cats. on them unless you live somewhere where there arnt emissons laws.
