'67 Power Steering Question

I've got a '67 C20 that has a power steering with what looks to be a manual box and a hydraulic cylinder where a steering damper normally is. Is that normal? It leaks like a sieve so I looked at LMCs catalog and they don't show anything like it. Could I buy a PS box off a '68 and replace all that leaking claptrap?

Thanks!
Tyler

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

Heck no, that is probably something a PO cobbled together, it is supposed to be a power box w/ a stabilizer, which looks like a shock on the steering

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

Get a new box, and stabilizer and a new pump, it will be much better in the long run

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

67's had a one year only thing going on. The 67's had a ram assisted power steering set-up that sounds like what you're describing.

Yes, 68-72 PS boxes will work, but you will have to "dimple" the frame to make it work. There is a dimple in the 68-72 frames that the 67 does not have and the steering box needs that dimple to fit properly. Some have used spacers to avoid that issue, but I'm not a big fan of that. Others have a lot more experience with this, hopefully someone who has done it will chime in.

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

spacers and shims are a bad idea.
the chainge was mid 68
what you are describing is 100% correct, the ram assist is right, and they all leak like that.

I agree Andy! I have a complete set-up from a '72 waiting for me to install it (my disk suspension is off a '71 so it should be a direct bolt in), but dimpling the frame (and living in an apartment) is what's keeping me from doing the swap. I hope to do it this upcoming winter when I have my own place!

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

Forgot to mention that I had to slightly notch the bumber brace on the drivers side, other than that it was a direct bolt in....

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

Some of the venders around here (GMC Paul for one) sell a nice kit to adapt a later style power steering box to a '67 frame. I restored the original system on my truck, the control valve is the same one used on Corvettes until 1982, and the cylinder is the same as certain year Impalas. If you hunt around you can find new ones (a bit pricey though). Yes, they are a bit leak prone but if you use new parts, keep the hoses tight and don't abuse the truck this type of power steering is O.K.

Re: '67 Power Steering Question

Check the FAQ too. Someone rebuilt their ram assist and put together a really cool tutorial with a lot of pics on how to do it.
