I just wanted to let anyone that is planning on changing the fuel tank grommet to be prepared to remove the seat and at least loosen the bolts to the tank. I cut the old one out and discovered that the tank is not centered in the hole in the cab - the wasn't enough room on one side to slide the grommet on. I'm gonna have to pull the seat and loosen the tank so I can get it on. Bottom line, it's not quite the slam dunk I was led to believe.

Mine wasn't centered so I stuck a heavy pipe in it and tweaked it a bit.

On the positive side, taking out the seat and loosening the tank isn't that hard, just stupid work that takes time.

I would try to move the filler neck around a bit like Wzuke suggested. If you can get some lube like tire bead grease and heat the grommet up warm, it might just slide in yet. Good luck!

Thanks - I have to take the seat out anyways - I used dish detergent to try to get it on, but no go. The seat is gonna get redone, and when I do that, I'll fix the grommet, but I would recommend to anyone replacing the grommet, you might be able to do it; just be prepared to take the seat out.

On my rebuild, the neck wasn't centered so I used my bottle jack handle to torque the filler neck over a little. I couldn't get the grommet to lay flat on the body and discovered that it was a "only fits one way" part. I don't remember exactly, but seems there was a nub on the grommet that had to line up correctly.
