Tailgate
Well i finally got pics of my tailgate to ask you guy what im missing, and i can't find my old thread so here it goes.
I think I'm missing something here,as the tailgate wont stay up, who can tell me what? I don't think that the dent is affecting it in any way, the little latches still extend and retract with a little force, like i would expect any old tailgate to need. |

Re: Tailgate
There is a latch/catch type thing that bolts to the inner bedside towards the top, where those 2 bolts in your picture are. Looks like they're missing...

Re: Tailgate
What you're missing is on the bedside, there should be a latch reciever thingy and folding arm attached to these two bolts.
This is a modified assembly, where there is a cable there should be a scissor arm to support the tailgate when it is down.

Re: Tailgate
I'm just kidding around, all those replys came while I was putting your pic in paint and loading it to the sight, so it surprised me to see responses when I clicked reply.
Is this piece missing on both sides? If so, there is no chance of the gate staying closed. But if it's on the passenger side, the gate should catch and stay relatively closed, that's how mine was for a while. I would look in junkyards for replacements, can't be too expensive as it's a part without high demand.

Re: Tailgate
Yeh it's missing on both sides, thats why i took the gate off. It stays up for a while, but a pothole or speed bump and it's down.

lowrollin70gmc:
That set up you show with the cables looks like a "kit." Mind sharing where you got that from?

Re: Tailgate
Those cables came off of a ranger. If you do a search for the ranger cables you should find the thread.

Re: Tailgate
the problem that people are posting about on here with the cables are that they break easier then the non breaking links we have.

Re: Tailgate
So, who's actually broken one? I've had A LOT of weight on the tailgate of my silverado, no broken cables here Maybe the Ranger cables (very light duty truck) are weaker than the ones off a full size? That would just be a case of using a part not designed to handle a "full size" load and would be the fault of the owner, not the cables.

Re: Tailgate
Here is the thread I took pics from, I think it's a FAQ:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=130505 I would think that any strap/cable from another pickup would hold up to the load, as it's a steel cable that's at least 1/4-1/2" D. Our stock straps narrow down to that width at the pivot points and bolt locations, and steel cable is probably slightly stronger due to it's multi-strand nature. We've put too large of loads on S10 straps for the city and it held up (the suspension was bottomed out, but the tailgate held).
