When does it knock?
At idle? At slow speeds? Or at WOT? If it only knocks at WOT, maybe you need some better gas. Could be a timing/ignition problem. |

Warm it up and change the oil and filter.
This will eliminate a variable. Valvoline is what I always use, but others will have different opinions. A knock at idle isn't what I think of as being a knock. To me, knock means detonation, and that's not good. A "tick" at idle could mean a sticking lifter, or -- Take a good look at your exhaust manifold gaskets. Sorry. How the hell do you look at them? Spend a couple of bucks and install new ones. See if the "knock" at idle goes away. All the best. Paul |

The first step in getting more power is to get what you have working correctly.
You don't have that yet. Change the oil and filter. Replace the exhaust manifold gaskets. If the "knock" is still there, you need to keep asking questions until it's fixed. Remember, those were only my suggestions. Lots of other people on this list know a lot more than I do. Get what you have working correctly. Then go for the upgrade stuff. "Patience, Grasshopper" Jeesh! I sound old. |

We have to stop meeting like this.
I've never been a fan of oil additives, but others may feel differently. Warm it up, change the oil and filter, replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets and see what happens. You can always add stuff to the oil afterwards if you want. Here's a trick that really works. Get (beg, borrow, steal) a chunk of old radiator hose - a section of garden hose would work. Put it up to your ear and poke the other end around in there. You'll be able to hear where your knock is coming from. Just keep your head out of the fan. All the best. Paul |

Start with the oil change, Listen for the noise with the hose, Check wires for damage, Do you have an inductive pickup timing light run down all the wires and make sure they are all firering. Nocking sound at idle could be bearings in the water pump, alternator. Ticking at idle could be exhaust leak at the manifold or lead pipe gasket. So when you are under there look for Black marks on all the exhaust pipe connections if there is might be a leak.
What year/size truck is it? Transmission?
