havin a blast with my (new?) beater
Picked up a '69 long bed 2 days ago finally that i had posted a week ago to get the boards opinion on pricing, etc. (it had been on okc CL forever -- guess patina'ed longbeds get no love)
This thing looks like a paw paw mobile on the outside, but it runs awesome -- better than i expected. Will post some more pics when the Oklahoma monsoon stops and i can crawl under it. But not having driven a vehicle with front drums and manual steering in a while --- i had to get used to thinking ahead when i drove 307 (i assume), 2 barrel and a TH350 trans. (i was actually relieved it didnt have the th 400 -- a 350 can be coaxed to get better gas mileage than the 400) It will chirp the tires if you want, but with this truck, whats the point. I would like to get 13 or 14 mpg, so i have a very light foot. I'll post more pics later, but plans for now are to get the "interior refresh" kit from LMC, (seat cover, dash pad, door panels and rubber floor mat), and put in some fresh bed wood and enjoy. The body is in good enough condition that it could be re-painted and replace the side trim for a minimal outlay (whatever that is) later on for a country boy resto (not body off), but for now, i may try to seal the "patina'ed" spots to keep them from turning into rust and just enjoy something that i won't shed a tear over if it gets scratched. (except the grill shell and frt bumper -- they are pristine, and i will be upset if anything happened to them, based on the latest prices i saw for a repop shell in LMC - ouch) PS -- if any of you has these old wheels, could you give me some center cap suggestions? being a 69, they are 6 lug (the PO stated that he couldnt find any "push thru" caps to fit it-- but i wonder how hard he looked) ![]()

Drop that thing on its belly, put some sport mirrors on it, and leave it alone!
Nice ride =D

Will most likely go with a 3/5 static drop and 6 lug front discs from ECE. I liked the big 'ol mirors at first, but they are only good at low speeds -- they vibrate so bad at 70 that they are almost useless, so the sport mirrors are an idea now -- (oh, and a turned metal dash insert like Corn's -- i have to have one of those someday too ----LOL -- it never stops)

Re: havin a blast with my (new?) beater
I'd put some smaller mirrors on it and drive it as is
![]() The slots look great. The PO may be correct, I had a set of slots for my truck and never put them on, I couldn't find a push through cover to go over the front hub. I didn't look real hard, but the ones I had with the rims wouldn't fit.

measure the I.D. of the center hole and let me know ... I may be able to help you out with some center caps.

Re: havin a blast with my (new?) beater
Nice find. I like the long beds especially if they're lowered some but not slammed. I think you'll enjoy getting it fixed up.
Re: slots- I had some on my 69 for many years and are now relegated to the scrap pile. The problem, at least on mine, is that the center hole is not wide enough to use a center cap. I almost took them in to a shop to have them widen the center opening, but decided not too since they tended to leak air quite a bit as they age. Not sure how you can prevent that other than sealing them some way. Another problem is that they tend to age to a darker gray color unless you're extremely dilligent on keeping them clean and polished... |

Dont slots usually have caps that pop onto the outside of the wheel?

Re: havin a blast with my (new?) beater
nice, i like the look of it, it would be nice to have one that is in just good enough condition to drive with out getting tetanus but not so nice that you will have to worry about it all of the time

Re: havin a blast with my (new?) beater
Try this guy on ebay for center caps. He is a really good guy. I got mine from him.
