My engine is gonna rock

Out with the old stuff. My engine started to die about a month ago.Shortly after the cam install,a metal scraping noise developed in the engine.I thought maybe the new double timing chain was to blame. No,not a sign of rubbing anywhere.Another buddy of mine said he thought the noise was coming from the bottom end.I said oh well.Fast forward to the auto trans install.Got the tranny in and test drove it and the engine started to break up real bad.Missing like no other.**** I thought to myself.Everything was new in the ignition except for the dizzy.I bought a new Accel dizzy and guess what.No change. It was time to pull the engine I guess.I spent a hour and a half pulling the engine.Got it on the stand. There must have been 3 or 4 quarts of fluid more than there should have been.Fuel pump leaking maybe?Pulled it apart and found all the mains were down to the copper and some of the rods were the same way.Found out though,it has been bored .040 over yay! I bought a new oil pump, tube, shaft, crank, flat top pistons,xs262-s cam(yup a solid lifter cam) and all the goodies.Scored a set of 461 double hump heads to replace the 305 heads. The engine should be done next week I hope, and the install will happen shortly after.I should have right around 9.5-1 comp and hopefully close to 400 hp if we figured it out right.Rock on

Hey that sounds good, John. Did you figure where all the extra fluid came from?

Good luck man.

Re: My engine is gonna rock

Good build man, about the same as my 67's getting. I like to go out with a BANG...lol..usually resulting in a piston thru the cylinder wall, but good job anyways. Anyways, I went flat tops on a .40 bore, same carb, Edlebrock rpm and a tiny 480 lift cam, well not sure about cam yet but not over 480 lift, and small lobe seperation. You should be around 400 horseys, but keep in mine the oldschool 350s where only around 180ish stock to the engine unlike trucks now are to rearend. Good luck on build, should run good. Is this engine a 305 or just has 305 heads? I've had some 350s with tiny 305 heads in the past. Are these 461's or 461X? anyways they are no accessory holes but are 62cc chambers closed chamber heads so you should run pretty good. I'm running bowtie heads fully ported with 205 valves and they are 63cc. The 461x's have a bit bigger valves and 64cc port volumes.

Sucks working 7 days a week, been there but FireFighters work 24 hours and off 48 hours, so I get some things done. If you where closer I'd help you, engines are about a 6 hour job, Ive pulled, tore down, rebuilt and put in and got running in around 8 hours.

Re: My engine is gonna rock

If you don't know very much about the heads, not saying you don't already but I like to know everything about everthing in my engine and heads so theres no hesatation when people say it sounds good and asks whats in it. Anyways, if you dont really know for sure....

3782461....64-66...327......Camel hump,no accessory holes,160/62cc port volumes,62cc chamber
3782461X...60-63...283/327..Camel hump,no accessory holes,larger 172/64cc port volumes, 62cc chamber

A little different so look and see if theres an x

On another note, I always blew up engines and wanted a gear drive but never did. They rob about 15 horse but I dont care I want that little blower sound...lol.

Re: My engine is gonna rock

It's a 350 that had the 305 heads with 1.84/1.50 valves. The double humps are the 461 no x.Someone had them on a 400 sbc because they had drilled steam holes in them.No worries though. Now I need to figure out how to run the alt because of no acc holes.400 hp sounds good to me.I have a fully built th350 and 3.54 gears in a Dana 44 rear.I think everything should hold up

Re: My engine is gonna rock

No real problem on the alt, it will bolt on the left side up high like most 350s are. Good gear also, I'm going a bit higher with a 350t and a 3.42 gear. I may not be correct on this but with your setup you may be around 350 horse. 350 isn't bad at all and should scream but most people think they are over 400hp but are not close because they 350 was like 180hp. I may very well be wrong here but your setup will need a posi if you dont already, but the gear is perfect. Dont worry about the alt, thats easy but worry about going thru tires...lol.

Re: My engine is gonna rock

350 hp is good too.I really dont want too much power as I won't be racing the truck.Just enough to get noticed is all I want. That and I will be getting horrible mileage. This truck see's no trailer time at all.I refuse to have a vehicle that requires to be towed to it's destination lol

Re: My engine is gonna rock

Well I finally got the engine in last week and got it fired up this evening.Cam is all nice and broke in.My neighbors got to experience probably the loudest 20 mins of pure hell they could ever imagine lol.
Now the only problem is the valve covers decided to leak a bit and also have to pull the god awful Accel dizzy back out due to a leak around the gasket
It took me over an hour to install that damn thing.
Other than that,it sounds like pure sex.I love the sound of a solid cam

...400 hp, priceless.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the Master Card reference. I wouldn't be surprised if your mileage doesn't drop off too much. You might find some increased efficiency with the new parts.

With the new rings and head work, hopefully you'll pick up some efficiency and the mileage won't be too bad. Let us know how she runs.
