to buy or not to buy
Hey guys I gotta friend who has a 350 motor sitting in his garage, says he'll take 150.00 for it. says it was running when he took it out of his truck. really was wanting to put a 283 in but can't find one at a reasonable cost to me since I'm a hard working poor man lol, is it worth it to buy and rebuild or should I really hold out for a 283? TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY THAT IS THE QUESTION

$150 for a running 350 is a steal. Even a rebuildable block is more than that.... I say it for now, run it until you get a 283 then resale....

I haven't seen a 283 on ebay for less than 500 or 600 which ain't bad but usually shipping and all it's alot more, I haven't found one locally.

To think we used to throw 283's away all day for a 327 or 350 swap
 Price sounds good, would it work for a running motor for now and does it have any of the acc. that you need still on it. If the answer is yes than jump on it and keep an eye out for a 283 for down the road because you know as soon as you get the truck running w/ the 350 you will have 283's being left on your door step. Get the 350. The added cubes make a huge diference, and if it's a matter of really preferring the old-school look of a 283, you can make a 350 look almost identical. That's the beauty of Chevrolet.

yea I believe I will get it. got a 250 right now can drive while I go through it and rebuild. once Installed I will put 250 up for sale.

283 man has an extra running 283 that needs rebuilt that he might sell you. he is in Bentonville Arkansas

talked to my buddy today, the motor has all the accessories except the carb. he says not sure if it is a 305 or a 350, how can I tell the difference, and is the 305 a good motor, I have heard friends in the past say they were not a very good motor?

go to mortec.com, they'll show you exactly where the casting number are (and provide the info to decode them).
Short course though, there is build information on the passenger side front of the block and casting (size, etc) information on the drivers side back. |

Curious about why you're so wanting a 283?I'm not judging even a little as I ran a 283 in a 68 Imp,then swapped it into the 66 1/2 ton I bought.It was not powerhouse,but it held up to anyway I could dream up to abuse it.I still own it.
That being said,if you're looking for more power,the 350 should be cheaper to get more power out of.

rollie, I guess the reason is the fuel mileage, I know a 283 has more HP than than the 250 but probably not as much as the 350, so I assume the gas mileage is probably a little better than the 350. And we all know how much that is playing a role in todays time.
