I have a 64 C20 longfleet with a 283 2bbl. I found a frame rail mounted canister style fuel filter. It looks factory. Are these very common? If I order a fuel filter for my truck will I get a replacement cartridge for it?

Someone has added that filter. You can buy them at any auto parts store.

Biggest problem with them is where the hoses attach to the fuel line. Since there isn't a hump for the rubber hose, they tend to leak very slowly.

If you go to start the truck after a few days and you have to crank for a minute to get fuel to the carb, you have a slight leak between the hose and the steel line. It can be fixed by using Permatex Hylomar, a fuel resistant sealant developed by Rolls Royce for use in carburetors.

I will have to look at it again. But I swear it is hard lined with fittings and very neatly done. When I get a break I will crawl under there and look again.

If it was installed with fittings it shouldn't leak. These can be bought at the parts store, too.

I have seen factory frame mounted fuel filters as you described but only on the earlier '60's trucks. In fact I have a 1960 GMC 4x4 suburban frame that has one on it. It is a spin on canister with a removeable filter element plumbed with double flared steel lines. IMO it is a factory install considering that the mounting bracket is riveted to the frame, and the overall apearance.

I started to say that I had never seen one of those. But then I remembered one. It was on a 1974 GMC 10 ton with the 478 V6. I believe that filter was stock on the big GMC, but the only reason I am saying that is the company I drove for didn't buy any luxury options.

I would guess (and it is a guess) that this was an option on the pickup, and that it was not installed enough to justify putting it on with rivets. Either that or installed by the dealer, either way would account for the bolts.

You need to find an option book to know for certain.

Hey Fred,

I decided to take a look at the "specification and option" sheet to see if it was on there.

4K28DB Fuel Filter Equip

The sheet shows everything that is on the truck except for the power steering, which I was told was dealer installed?

That's the same as the one on my GMC Suburban frame....mine just has another bracket that is riveted to the frame. Thanks for the info on the option for the fuel filter TexasC10

Yep I have the same one on my bent 4x4 frame. Also when I had my 63 GMC 4x4 it had the same one also.

The filter is under the cab, pass side frame rail just below and in front of the fuel tank. The rubber hose is coming from the fuel tank.
