Painting the drums
I just put new steal wheels on the truck, the rims are spoked and I can see the drums behind them. I got to thinking rusted steal drums against painted steal wheels means rusted steal wheels soon. I went to Napa and ordered caliper paint that said it was good for drums as well, it came in about the smallest $20 can I’ve ever seen and I got a discount because of my work. Anyways I need to sand blast the drums to get the rust off and our sand blaster at work sucks (jams all the time, took me an hour to do half of one). The powder coater that we use all the time will blast them for about $25-$30 bucks, the question is, is there a cheap sand blaster that works good that I can buy because I’m sure I’ll have more sand blasting to do? Also has anyone powder coated their drums before? Dose it work and last?

Well powders not to overly expensive, and it can't hurt to give it a try. If it messes up, it just means spending a little extra time and doing it a different way. As for a cheap sandblaster, what kind of budget are you on? Are you looking for a cabinet, or just the gun? Take a look here for some cheap ones from Harbor Freight.

If you have a compressor, get a bucket blaster. I used one for years on every part I ever painted...

im going to agree my buddy lent me the cheapo from harbor freight and i used a $3 bag of play sand from lowes on a blue tarp to blast the underside of my truck and it worked great.. i then used a cleaned out shop vac to pick up the sand and used it over and over while working on it

Well I called the powder coater to see if they've done drums before and they said they do them all the time and they hold up fine. I'm getting them both done for $65, it was going to be $40 for the brush on stuff anyways. I think I'm going to go get the sand blaster too, thanks for the help.

Normal play sand contains silica and is very bad for your lungs. As I understand it Silicosis (I think is what they call it) is a direct result of breathing silica dust.

My asthma kicks my A@# when ever I breath any dust or smoke (sucks being a welder) so I wear a resporator whenever I do any of thing like that. Good to know that though. Also we have a waterjet at work and we have to dump the hopper from time to time and throw the high quality 80 grit garnet away so I think I'll use some of that instead, just sift it out first.

Finally got the drums back from the powder coater, he didn’t even charge me (we do A LOT of business with them).
