6 cylinder mpg
what kind of mpg could a person expect from a 6 cylinder 1 barrel with a 3sp (manual) on a 66 chevy 1/2 ton?

I can't answer that question yet because I'm still trying to get my 66 1/2 ton running. But I know there is a big difference in mileage between the L6 292 and the L6 250 I don't know which one you have.

I have a 66 250 1 barrel and im pretty sure i got like 20 on the way from champaign, IL to monroe, WI. Its like 5 hrs....

My 77 C10 with a 250 and 4 speed gets around 16 mpUSg. When it was under full load pulling a heavy trailer, I managed 9 mpg traveling at 55 mph. The weights and aerodynamics are probably about the same.
Overdrive would probably help a lot and that's what I'm doing on my burb.

I am not sure if it is a 250 or a 292. How would I know? I am reasonably sure the motor has been taken out at least once, I haven't had this truck that long, but I am thinking about concentrating on making it my daily driver and retiring that gas guzzling 2500 hd. Thanks

The best thing you can do for mpg is going with a tranny that has overdrive.

There's a couple of ways to tell the 230/250 from the 292. On the 250, the engine mounts are directly across from each other. On the 292, the passenger side mount is 4" further forward (fuel pump behind the mount).
The second way is the pushrod covers. On the 292 they're about 6" high, but on the 230/250 they're 4" high. Grab the casting number off the block and look it up on inliners.org if you want to be sure (or if you have a 230/250).

thanks my truck apparently is the 250. the motor mounts are across from each other and the valve covers are only 4" high.
Thanks for the reply about overdrive transmission but putting in an overdrive transmission is more than I would be prepared to tackle, fuel economy is not a major consideration but I do give it some consideration now that I am leaning toward making this my daily driver, I will be looking for ways to improve fuel economy, a friend says 15" tires are more fuel efficient then 16" and snow tires are fuel hogs. I would not have thought of that one. |
