327 option
ok guys!
i have been going back and forth on which motor to run in my 66. today i came across a guy who is selling a rebuilt 327 turnkey motor with a 2 yr warranty and only 100 miles on it . he is also throwing in a brand new 350 trans (3yr warranty), headers, radiator and a bunch of other odds and ends not listed. all this for 3000.00 shipped to my door. what are you opinions on this deal! i currently have a 283 that needs rebuilt and a turbo 400 trans also needs an overhaul. through my research i can get a new 350 for the price of rebuilding my 283... seems like pretty good deal to me but im not a motor guy! let me know what you guys think. Howdy! Are you sold on using a 327 for some level of originality? The price is probably fair, but I'm always a bit leary about freshly rebuilt engines that are now being sold after 100 miles. Did it not make the current owner's expectations? You gotta wonder....
In previous talks on here, there seemed to be a consensus that the 350 GM crate (290 HP) is probably the best bang for the buck. Also, if your truck is a driver, now would be a great time to jump to the O/D tranny (700R4 or 4L60). Negligible extra work at this point, and the cost difference would quickly be made up at today's gas prices. Just my 2 cents.

forgot to mention that the guy selling it was going to put it in his truck... (dont know what year) but it was wrecked and in bad shape so he decided to part it out and finish his other projects. so he decided that the 327 and t350 had to go and want to get rid of it. i dont think it was a matter of not meeting his expectations... he told me he just doesnt have room or a need for it.
i have researched the GM350 (290 hp) and i agree that it is a good price... but your only getting a long block and maybe some valve covers... by the time you add carb, manifold, water pump, dist... etc your in the same ballpark cost wise. i am not looking to keep it original. theres a big empty space under the hood that i am looking to fill. 283, 327, 350 im not picky when it comes to the motor!

With the current gas prices I would say you should seize the opportunity to put a single cam honda four banger in there. It should make it scoot and if you put the right fart can on it it will sound like you have some serious muscle under the hood.

That 327 comes with a lot of stuff! Sounds like a good deal...I do agree with Greg though...Why did he pull it after just 100 miles? What was it in? Anyhow, if there's a good explanation to these questions, I'd go with the 327... that's not a bad price for a 10:1 motor with 2.02 heads and all those other goodies...Good luck!

Nice motor BUT.......
If you have the original rear end, then you really need an overdrive tranny for both milage AND to do highway speeds(70 mph). MAYBE your 327 will handle the RPM's to do 70 mph but I bet you wouldnt like running it that way. JMHO |

A 327 is going to make less HP and less torque than a comperable 350 for about the same amount of money.
I always stay away from the "fresh rebuilt" engines...it's usually complete BS to say "well, I put 100 miles on it and then pulled it". It usually means "Man, I did something really wrong on this build and it's junk...let me find someone to rip off". If you can't hear it run, then cough twice and pass. All IMHO, of course |
