Sweet idea. I'm in the planning stage for redoing my whole instrument panel. I'm going for the tried and true wood grain look. Maybe some billet here and there, but something totally different than the original none the less. I love the cock-pit look! I operate radar on a guided missle destroyer, so I'm already into lots of buttons, switches, and turny-thingies. Lights too!

P.S. Move where you want to, but first take a vacation trip to Hawaii. I'll exchange room and board for a couple nights for help on and/or parts for the truck. I get no help out here, and there's hardly any junkyards with good parts.

I almost went to Hawaii a year ago, but the cash flow restricted it. It would be a cool place to go. I bet it sucks there as far as finding parts and stuff, you probly have to pay high for everything huh?

Hey Mike! Looks great.
Have you considered mounting the tranny temp sending unit in the outlet side of the transmission cooler lines? This is really a better place to mount it anyway. You want to measure the hottest portion of the fluid, and the fluid exiting the tranny on its way to be cooled is the hottest fluid. This way you won't have to remove the pan to install the fitting.

I'm not sure what the electrical sending units look like but my mechanical gauge has a bulb type on it. It's about 2" long, so places in the pan are not many. This is the only place I could find and I still had to space the fitting out some to keep it from hitting. The last one is the tacky brazing job. Uhh yeah, that original braze was kinda bad. I plan on just using my mig on mine, assuming I can do it without burning holes and warping the crap out of the pan can you see any reason not to do it that way?

I'm for sure not a welder so I couldn't tell you if it will work or not. I know you can't weld brass. You will at least need to get a steel fitting wouldn't you?
All you need to do to braze is use a cutting torch with the right tip and a fluxed brazing rod. It's about like soldering in a way, but the temps are much higher.

I wouldnt try welding, unless you have a backup pan. I see alot of welding here at our shop (mig mostly). And welding creates a ton of heat and can warp thin steel (or materials) in no time at all. In order to seal it, you will need a goos nice bead all the way around. Creating this bead will take some time and cause alot of heat, most likely warping your pan. If you tack it around, then keep going back over it a little at a time, allowing it to cool inbetween, then you may get it to work. I also am not a welder, but have seen alot done and have a good idea of what kind of stuff happens when you weld.

I knew a guy down at school that could cut a pop can in half and then weld it back together in good shape. That guy had skills!

I really like what you did with the interior of your truck. It looks sick!
I am currently working on a custom wood dash that I am making myself. For the rectangular dash cover on the passenger side I am making flame cutouts for the AC vents and then I am going to stain the wood before I install it. The hard part is gonna be cutting out the flames!
