Transmission Compatability
I have a 77 chevy c10 stepside with a 250 straight six, and im wondering what 4 speed transmissions are compatible? im about 90% positive its a muncie, and its a 4 speed. im looking to put a car transmission in it, and was wondering what cars would have a tranny i could bolt up without much more modification than maybe the drive shaft?

Re: Transmission Compatability
I dont think a cars transmission would gain anything, unless its over-drive

Re: Transmission Compatability
really? because i have the 4 speed, but one is the granny and is practically useless... the rest of the gears are so tall that they feel like theyve got a really thin powerband. maybe its just me. in a few months im gonna put a header, ram air intake manifold and a 390 holly carb on it, maybe that will fix the problem :p

Re: Transmission Compatability
A T5 out of a Camaro/Firebird would be your best option. 5 speed.

Re: Transmission Compatability
oh ok now i see what your getting at, yes a cars 4 speed would have a useable 1st gear, but i agree with Pyrotechnic, if youre going to go through the trouble, make it a 5-speed

Re: Transmission Compatability
I’m looking at the NV4500 out of a 93 or newer, it’s a 5 speed with an overdrive and a granny. I want the granny for towing, if you’re not looking for that then the getrag 5speed or NV3500 5speed have over drive and no granny.
This site has some info on it, I had a better site but I can't find it, I'll keep looking though. http://www.rsgear.com/Trans_IDguide_domTruck.htm

Re: Transmission Compatability
Unless the original is one of the OD 4-speeds, the truck 4 speeds are 3 speeds with a creeper. The car trans will not have a creeper. Behind a straight 6 that is NEVER used to move heavy loads, the car 4 speed will be a little more driveable ( one more useful gear). The minute you want to drag something heavy you'll miss the creeper.
Will it bolt to the engine? Probably, if it came out of a Chevy. It probably will even bolt up to the bellhousing and fit (remember, 4 speed L6 cars existed). You may have to change clutches to get the correct disc for the trans. On the back end, I would be suprised if it is exactly the right length and correct output splines. A little work with crossmemebers and driveshaft yokes and lengths would fix that. But for all that, if you drive it like a car, put in the NV3500 and get the overdrive. At least then your gas mileage will improve.

Re: Transmission Compatability
This is related to the passenger car 4 speed only as I have done this.
Any passenger car non-OD 4 speed will swap over and will bolt to the existing bellhousing and use the existing linkage/acutator. If procuring a pass 4 speed, I would get it with the bellhousing though. You will need a new clutch assembly as the splines are different. ANY bellhousing from a 73-87 V8 will bolt to the 250..
