Re: vin number
I wouldn't tamper with the VIN, but maybe you can still find an old skool dude that will pass your inspection for a Benjamin or something like that?...
By and large in most states (I know I can speak for Maryland) the inspection routine is all but a joke, unless your trucks body is falling off the frame and your tires are rotted or something like that. It's getting harder to find an older mechanic who'll write off your inspection though.

Re: vin number
I'm in the same boat with my '86 and really only have two options.
1. find all the emissions equipment from somewhere reinstall it so it can pass inspection for the next 3 years. or 2. Just do a frame off that will take 3 years so once it's done I can just register it as antique :-) Not sure what to do about it, i'm still undecided |

Re: vin number
definatly ilegal.. but as long as you dont touch the pop rivets holding it down, who is to say wether the dash is the one that came with the truck.. and as long as the dash pad is down right who can tell if the vin was cut out of another truck and rewelded in a different one... not that i or anybody else would ever do anything illeagal

Re: vin number
now to go one step further,, if you have a 1983 truck and you do a frame off on that and replace the cab with a newer one , even tho its still technically illegal aslong as you have the paperwork to back it up, you would get away with putting the newer cab on the older frame and swapping vins.
Most states want you to not swap the vins and then go to the DMV or state highway patrol with all your documentation and THEY will issue you a state vin which is nothing like the real vin of the truck and hence it looses all value as a collectors item.. doing it my way they can still trace the frame numbers back to the original truck so they see what ya did... your way it looks like someone fanagled the numbers and usually its a stolen truck when they do that
