Re: custom hood cowl?
Hot Rod Magazine an article in the 80's with a early model mustang where they cut the hood as you described. They lifted the trimmed pieces up with spray paint lid caps to give the same height. The then used a rolled piece of metal to patch in cutting caty corner to give the same roll on both sides. I know someone on this board talked about it last year, perhaps you can do a search and find it.

Re: custom hood cowl?
I’m a sheet metal welder by trade and I wouldn’t do it. The heat warpage will kill you, and if you can’t do the work yourself the cost would be more then one from LMC. The only way I can see it is to spot weld and bondo. If I were to do anything I would cut your hole and fiberglass your cowl in.
Having said that I do plane on making my truck an extra cab for no other reason then I can. So don’t let me talk you out of it.

Re: custom hood cowl?
I would certainly would practice on an old hood first and if that goes ok then do it but i myself think it would turn out to be one heck of a lot of work to get it to look good

Re: custom hood cowl?
Good idea but you have to cut it very carefully very straight, and weld it very good... Post some pics of your friends's hood!!!

Re: custom hood cowl?
Jump in with both feet, if it doesn't work, then buy onefrom LMC, but try and save a little $ whenever you can. I'm going to build on for my 64 because I want to keep the "V" on the hood. Besides, a little warpage is nothing a skim coat of bondo won't fix.

Re: custom hood cowl?
I would only reccame, recomen, recc.... I would only advise the best of body workers to do this... I thought I was pretty good until I tried to tackle that monster... save your pennies, and hours upon hours of spot tacking, grinding, bondo-ing for something that "looks o.k." the further off you are.
