4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

Anyone have their truck dropped 4/6 with a Camaro rear sway bar? I installed a rear Camaro sway on mine with a ECE 4/6 drop and am having some minor clearance issues in the rear, but I think a CPP c-notch might take care of this. The brackets that mount the Camaro bar to the rear axle are hitting the frame on some of the hardest hits to the suspension.

Anyone already done this?

Also, a separate problem on the install - where do you get (2x3x1") blocks of aluminum to space out the end link brackets? Can't find anyone locally that has aluminum billets.

that sounds about normal w/ a 6" drop. You can get away without notching, but will hit on the bigger bumps. It's pretty easy to install a c-notch and you can usually find an ad in Custom Classic Trucks or Classic Trucks for CPP where they have them on sale for 99.00.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

I'm just not sure if the c-notch would stop the bottoming out completely, especially with the extra height of the sway bar bracket on top of the rear axle. Hopefully someone has tried this before and will chime in.

Thanks for the mention of the ad in Classic Trucks, I saw another post while searching and plan on saving $30 if I go this route. I may just take it to a welder and get an estimate first.

Can you post some pics of your set up? I would like to know the answer to this also.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

I don't have any pics yet, but my set up is like where the Camaro bar originated from:

http://www.low69cst.freeservers.com/CamaroBar.htm

The only difference is the axle is a lot closer to the frame than the pictures there. I'll get some pics the next time I take a wheel off to do some work in there. Oh, and I didn't weld on the clamps to the rear axle - I used 3" muffler clamps like I saw someone else do. Still have yet to find a way to space out the end link brackets, though.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

I'm running a Camaro rear bar but now I have an 8" step notch. That's with bags and 2.5" blocks. The sway bar was the reason I decided to keep the notch at 8". Otherwise I would have cut it down to 6". Notice that the 3" clamps are positioned inside the frame. That's where they were before the notch and cleared (bar would hit first if anything). I recommend you WELD the endlink brackets to the frame. Here are some pics at full lift.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

Thanks Frizzle, that's quite the setup you've got there! Too aggressive for me right now, but I love the whole Tahoe thing you've got going.

I'll try sliding my brackets toward the center of the axle an inch or two. I think I'll have to remove the factory brake line hold down tabs on the axle to move them inward though. Your build is probably where I got the idea for the muffler clamps? I've got the mounts angled forward like yours also for the minor additional clearance.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

Thanks. I didn't have to remove the brake line clips, but I have a '72 rear. I also put a few tack welds on the 3" clamps to the axle tubes (on the plate half, not the U-Bolt) to keep them oriented correctly if/when I remove the bar (which I have, and it was nice).

To answer your original question, I think a C-Notch couldn't hurt!

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

I'm going to work with this some more, I've moved the clamps inboard of the shocks today - after the pics were taken - but something's still hitting - I think it's hitting on the driver's side. I trimmed maybe 1/4" from the ECE adj. panhard bar bracket where the sway bar was hitting on the passenger's side. I am gaining on it, though - every adjustment I've made, I've gained some suspension travel. The roads here are terrible, and the old suspension design doesn't help it, but I'll drive a few more days and see where the new marks are on the frame and sway bar components. Before I do a c-notch, I've got to know that it will make the indentation in the frame in exactly the right place. The end link setup is just temporary, BTW.

The pics show: (1) uncompressed suspension (2) compressed suspension from the rear and then from the side.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

Ok, so I've finally decided not to notch my frame - I plan to use the truck for towing and do not want to take a chance on the frame bending.

After looking at it for some time (it's almost been a years already!), I'm going to try to run the bar upside down on the bottom of the differential. I'll have the end links installed next week, pending getting some spacers for the brackets. This may be a way to avoid clearance issues between the bar and frame. Still looks like a fairly clean install to me and doesn't reduce clearance much.

Looks good to me. It shouldn't hang any lower than shock relocators. Looks like it will work wih lowering blocks too- just need longer links than before. I like it.

It looks like you recently went with rear discs too! Did you remove the bed to install your shock relocators?

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

I didn't have to remove the bed to install ECE's rear shock upper mounts - I guess these are the relocater's you're refering too? I can't remember, It's been over a year. I remember haveing to grind and drill to remove the old ones, and that the cross bar in the frame probably needs replaced eventually.

The disk brakes have turned out to be a good move - the drums were ok, but they liked to stick when they got wet and I just don't like the added maintenance. Like the sway bar, the brakes are from a Camaro - check out Glock's thread on brackets if you're interested:

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

So far, so good. It road tested ok, I'm keeping my eye on clearances for the brake line, hoping to not pinch or rupture one. The suspension feels 10 times better just for the fact that nothing hits when going over bumps now. Still have confidence to take the corners a bit faster, too! The only thing hitting is the parking brake cable on the exhaust, but I plan on fixing that when I do the exhaust again. Ignore the coat hanger wire for now

Good to know Frizzle, so I assume w/ springs it's a non issue, as you said.

How much does it limit it? Were you able to get full dump? Full lift is not really a limiting factor for me.

I'd say it limited it to about 7-8" travel at which points the end-link mounts are being stressed pretty hard. You can set it where you want it, so full dump won't be an issue.

Re: 4/6 Drop w/ Camaro rear sway with C-Notch?

TTT - This setup is working really good with ECE 4/6 drop, and looks factory except for the aluminum spacers. I don't know why Addco or Hellwig couldn't modify the bends a little and make a swaybar set like this (hint, hint).

Just thought I'd post the numbers for the sway bar end links for anyone that finds this later and decides they want to do this, cause I'll forget for sure by the time I'm asked -

Energy Suspension 9-8121G 4 1/2 inch end links (or 9-8121R if you want red bushings)

I bought 1.25 x 2 x 3 1/4 aluminum spacers from an online company - one of the ads that came up when I googled "aluminum flat bar". They didn't have 1 1/8" stock like the guy that did the first conversion. Anyway, hope this helps someone.

I bought a rear sway bar for the 71. I got it at Hawks thrid gen camaro parts here in town. $75.00 for all of it bar, u-bolts and the mounting clips. Got to clean it up and then install it.
