Steering linkage with chopped cross member?

I was at the local junkyard today checking out the latest cars and got to looking around at the early (70's-80's?) chevy G vans and got to wondering if the U-joints out of the steering shaft might work for those with chopped crossmembers.

The were a "pich bolt" style, so they might work, just not sure about the size.

This may be an affordable option in comparison to the flaming river joints.

Anyone think this might work?

You can also weld them to your shaft if it is a little too big or small. Just make sure you keep it square. Dont weld in every spot though or your column will be attached to your steering box. LOL at least get one end of it to bolt or clamp

I know that it will save some dough looking for steering joints out of the wrecking yards. Aftermarket steering joints can get pretty spendy. Check out www.unisteer.com their joints are the least expensive and they only sell them in polished stainless. They may be affordable enough, and will save some time and possible headaches.

Re: Steering linkage with chopped cross member?

Yeah, not a bad price at all.

The only reason I brought it up was simply to bring another possible option. I'm not sure that they would even be worth the time. Just thought if they were close to bolt in then someone would be ahead.

Re: Steering linkage with chopped cross member?

Yea not bad thought at all, if you can take the u joint out of it and maybe powder coat/paint or something that would be cool. But the only ones i have replaced was on semis, i guess an auto would be the same concept
