Broken spark plug
Anybody know what would cause the center electrode insulator to break up? I have had this problem twice now, on the number one cylinder only, and it causes a cold miss and an occasional backfire through the carb until it warms up, then is mostly smoothes out. It's an inline six. Any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Broken spark plug
Inline sixes have fuel distribution problems. If the cyl is running too lean, it would detonate, and melt the electrodes, and break the the porcelain. Another cause of your problem could be too much timing.

Re: Broken spark plug
I'd have to agree w/ the probable detonation. Definately not a good thing.
It doesn't fix the problem, but I have found that Bosch Platinums are much better against the insulator coming apart.

Re: Broken spark plug
I never hear detonation, but that is a possibility. The electrode itself does not appear to be melted, just the ceramic insulator is missing a chunk. The last time it happened was over a year ago, and I drive it every day. If it was too much timing, I would think it would happen pretty quickly?
