Help with steering box needed..
I picked up one of those steel plates with spacers so that I could mount a newer style gearbox to my 68 K-10. Of course it has no hardware and no instructions. The tapped holes are 7/16" fine thread and my steering box is course thread. I can fix that I think. Problem is that I don't know the correct angle since my cab is off. If I line it up where it belongs (or seems too) then it's hitting leaf spring at full left turn. I might have to get creative and make new holes to get the proper location and angle.
Does anyone have good pics of this area on their K truck? know the angle of the gearbox? thanks...

Re: Help with steering box needed..
ok, just found another members post on mounting one of these.. Looks like i'll be moving the front of the bracket up about 1.5"...
I'll wait until I mount the cab and steering column to insure alignment...

Re: Help with steering box needed..
If you are converting from non-power to power steering the line up the new gearbox using the top rear hole from the old gearbox location. The lower two holes and the top front hole will need to be re-drilled as seen in my pic.
**Also not the you might need to trim a notch from the corner of the core support mount as ssen in the middle pic** Last edited by Americanrider; 10-14-2008 at 12:42 PM. |

Re: Help with steering box needed..
thanks, I used your photo after I posted all this. Only thing is that the K-10 manual gearbox only has three holes in the frame, lower front and upper/lower rear.
I'm gonna use your photo and line up the steering column when the cab is remounted. thanks for the pics...

another thing you guys haven't mentioned in this thread, make sure you use a steering shaft from a 69-72. the 67-68 shaft doesn't have the flexable joint in it and over time the lower bearing will cut through the shaft . using a p-s box with the spacers to clear the frame puts the shaft in a slight bind. i know a person that had this happen and he about $hit himself when it snapped on a freeway offramp.

Re: Help with steering box needed..
I going with a van tilt and a newer steering shaft... My 68 shaft is all one piece so I can see how you could bind it up...
Might even do u-joints, we'll see

Re: Help with steering box needed..
Mike I had the same problem and used the two two right holes they will line up with your spacer plate and mark and drill the left top hole. The bottom right threaded hole in steering box will need to be drilled out with a 7/16 bit so a bolt can be installed into your threaded spacer.Hope this helps, Blaine

Re: Help with steering box needed..
what year is your truck? I changed my axle to an 82 so the newer steering arm with draglink will work.
