LonghornJeff69,
The problem is very common. I had one on my '83 with the same problem. Fixed it once but it went loose again. I finally just replaced the whole column. To fix the problem you have to remove the steering wheel along with other small components. There are 3 screws down in the column that need to be tightned up. If you remove these add some "lock" stuff on them so they won't come loose again. The hardest part is removing the "c" wire clip holding the return signal sprocket. Unless you have four hands its almost impossible to apply enough pressure to push down the spring and remove the "c" wire. There is a tool to make the job easier. I made one of mine own. The shape is "U" and has one hole big enough for the steering column stud to fit through it. I use the steering wheel nut to apply pressure on the plate then remove the "c" clip. You can have the column rebuilt. I was quoted $75 locally. Check with your dealer or talk to the mechanic themselves. Some local bodyshops may also have experience mechanics to fix the problem. ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" http://www.geocities.com/abetterchemist/ |
