Getting Tired of this...Project Blues - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I have the truck that I am building for my Dad almost done (or so I thought) - I noticed a significant transmission leak on my driveway...

I didn't have time to address it so I took it down to my local mechanic to have him run the dye through it and locate the leak.

He calls me back about an hour later and tells me that every seal on the damn thing is leaking -

He then tells me that - since every seal is leaking - that I should just have it rebuilt (names another local guy to do it) since they will have to tear it apart anyway to fix the leaks.

He then gives me an estimated price of $850 to R&R and repair it - NO WAY.

I have come to the conclusion that it won't be done this year (I was hoping to have it [mechanically] done before I left for vacation this weekend). I was wrong...

Anybody got a rebuilt 2wd TH400 (with paperwork) sitting around that I can buy to get this thing done and not pay $900 with tax to fix this one?

Call more shops. That's more in line with a 700R rebuild (and even a bit high for that), I thought the th400's were much cheaper to redo?

That sux. But at least you're getting to work on your truck. My project blues consist of my truck has been sitting in a pile of parts for over a year. I had plans to start working on it once my wife and I got moved (I got a bigger shop) but things came up. I think i'm about ready to get back into it but winter is coming and I don't have insulation in the shop yet.

I bet the R&R is at least half of the cost. If you have time pull it yourself and save some $$$. Good luck.

I feel your pain, having to take down my tranny three times last week and at the end I just went ahead and had a "Serious" 350 built to handle all the horsepower and it was definetly alot more than the 900.00 they are asking for. If you are looking for stock tranny performance you could have it done for 500.00 around here..Good luck....

Run a quart of "K&W transX" in it & see if it will soften the seals back up (might take a little while). Not sure it will work but its pretty good stuff & you might be able to go out & enjoy the truck for a while.

When i parked my 69' in june (to tear it all apart) the transmission decided to leak all over my floor too. Pulled it and found out every gear including reverse was burnt! To re-build mine it's costing me $220 parts and labour. Although mine is a th350 not sure how much more a th400 would be to rebuild. Or i'm going to buy a fresh re-build with a stage 2 shift kit for $300 off a good friend.
