Wiring a ignition switch with push button starter

Okay gang, I received this e-mail from Jeff who was surfing the web for three days before he found us. I need some help here. Without looking at the schemicatics I really can't help much. Hopefully someone has dones this type of modification. Here is the e-mail
Hey .. i seen your truck while surfing for pics of trucks like mine last year.. i just today stumbled on this web page forum.. im looking for info on how to install a after market on/off/acc key ignition switch and a push button starter in my fabracated sheet metal dash .. and the reason im not using stock column switch is i went to after market race column .. im stuck though and dont know what wires are what i decided to look for forums on this topic and for 3 days now have had no luck .. i know what wires are the starter /yellow, ignition/pink batt+/red (theres 2 of these) and acc/brown going into the stock ignition switch..but.. always the dreaded but .. heh there are 2 orange going into one connection and one smaller wire that is a 2 color wire that i have no idea what to do with them.. the back of my after market switch has 4 poles to hook wires too .. and no instructions.. the 4 poles are bat/st/acc/ign. what to do with the 2 orange wires the little 2 color wire and the other bat+ wire on stock ignition harness.. man thank you so much if you can help me out ,, i will send a pic of the stock ignition switch with the wires i described .. there are 2 plugs going into it blue and black .. from what i found so far is that the blue one is the one to make the truck start and the black one has all the inside cab stuff to fuse box.. let me know .. jeff 1982 chevy short wide.. i just primed it grey last week..

Jeff, do you not have a large purple wire (10-12 ga.) under the column that is going to the switch, this should be the same on any GM or how about a large yellow wire these go to the starter on GM also, these are the wires that I would cut and put starter interupt swithces on at the car lot. If you supply 12+ volts to this wire you can "hot wire " it, so why not add a push button 20 amp. or larger with a keyed 12+ volts on one side and the other side of the switch and the purple on the other side!

According to my Haines manual the 2 orange wires go to the fusebox (probably to give power to some of the fuses and things connected to those fuses)
The 2 color wire is tan/white and goes to the brake pressureswitch and brake pressureswitch warning light.

Hope this helps.

The two orange wires are probably for the acc side of the switch. Just guessing without looking at the wiring schemetic.

cool it worked thanks guys .. but now if i hook up the orange wires to acc or ign.. it creates a feed back in the system and keeps the truck running for a few after i turn the key to off... someone said something about putting a relay before the switch on the orange wires and this would stop that any idea? can i just use a toggle on it too? whouldn't that also kill the wire and stop feed back .. lol gotta love the toggle's ok thanks guys .. jeff

cool ok here is more pics of the dash .. all it is i hade 2 pieces of 64 in. sheet metal cut and split 7x9 with a 90 tang to fasten front gauge panel to it.. i used a jig saw and drill thats it was a pain to cut out gauge holes .. but didnt want to spend the cash on a whole saw bit i would use one time lol .. i need to get after market speedo and fuel gauges still i jsut used the stock ones .. i put <black light> 12 v led's for the turn signal indacater lights i was gonna use the dark purple /black uv leds for the gauges <realy makes the orange needles stick out> but was hard on my eyes so i just went with white light with the option of usuing buld covers to change light color.. sheet metal only cost me around 18 bucks .. before fasten the front gauge panel to the top i put self addhesive home weather stripping for around doors on the lip to keep rattle down.. and on all contacts to inside cab.. i took the whole stock cab dash supports out of the truck all the way to fire wall and left about a 2 inch tang under windsheild to fasten dash to truck. and on the sides im gona use spacers to fastten it to side of cab right in front of doors... im sure im gonna leave something else out .. so if ya have any more questions just post them or email me.. thanks jeff....also i edged it all with car door rubber 3 bucks from autozone... keep the nicks down.. lol k

Looks like it's going to be one good looking custom truck for sure. Are you planning on dragging it only?

Hey CustomChevy, are you getting any spare money that you can pass the excess over here. I have a few daydreams for my 55 GMC shouldn't take more than 12 to 15K !!! Just think how much I will be saving you by not getting a new SSR.

I plan on Driving it on the street for the most part.. if I ever get a chance to get down to the track, I May see what it turns in the quarter. I took the stock blown up 305 out of it when i got the truck last year and put a 350 back in it.. pretty basically stock. Other than few mods like Headers / 3 in Exhaust to the 3 in. in/out flowmaster and turned down at the rear axel. (this im gonna have to run out the back) was cool for Little bit, but now its just way too loud. I was wanting to get the exhaust tone similar to the 5.0 mustangs but i think im gonna run it out the back with a H pipe... (if you all have any ideas let me know).......... I Re-did the turbo 350 that was in it with a Modified valve body and do it your self type shift kit. some tricks i picked up off the net and from friends.. bangs through the gears so hard I had to put lock nuts on the tailshaft where it bolts to crossmember !!!!! withen the next month or so, I have a new motor im going to drop in it. its a 350/400 crank 383 set up I bought from a friend last year it has all the goody's already in it.. crank scraper / windage tray / big big bump stick / 10 - 1 comp. pistons / Eldebrock Alum Closed chamber heads/// Etc.. I love the way the motor sounds and runs, It's in his car now and I had to talk him out of it. anyway thanks for all the compliments on the truck ..

I have headers with 2.5" pipe into a X pipe then to 2 Flowmasters 2.5" and dumped before the axles. I know the sound you're talking about and I would suggest going with Aerochambers from Hooker. LOHRTBT has them turned down before the axle and IMO so much better sounding and much better flowing. That's the next pair I'm getting.

thanks for the input. I will look into the Aerochambers.. The X pipe looks like it Flows alot better than H so I will probally go with that. Does it go in the same places basically as the H in the exhaust . heres what I was told to do on the H pipe. Take some cheapy spray paint, coat the pipes, drive it for a while, where the burn of the paint stops is about the right loactaion to weld in the H pipe??? sounded good to me. ok well thank ya again . BTW> who is LOHRTBT AND IMO? what does that mean?
