Carb to TBI conversion?
I am thinking of getting a TBI motor out of an 87-95 truck to put in my 84 truck when I swap my 305 for a 350. What all do I need to remove form the donor truck to make it work? Is the oxegen sensor located in the pipe or the manifold?

Definately get the fuel pump and gas tanks if you can out of the donor truck. As for wiring the engine, I would use the engine but buy a whole new TBI setup from Holley. www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com have complete TBI wiring setups that are more modern and will probably out perform the stock TBI. The installation will be easier too. Check on www.ebay.com for a TBI converions book. Check your local library or book store too.

Although the Holley system is easier to install, I have been told more than once, unless you get the expensive digital one, a factory GM setup is the way to go. I have done a bit of research on the subject so ill pass on a few bits of useful info.
First, you need to have an electric pump. One way is to get the tank from an '87 truck because that is the only direct replacement for your '84. However, in the late 80's or early 90's fuel injected ford trucks used an electrical fuel pump that was on the frame. I would use one of these (dont tell anybody you used a ford part though!!!). The early TBI's dont require much pressure, what ever year pump you get, I would make sure it is for a ford TBI system. Take your time with the harness You shouldnt have to cut anything. There is a vehicle speed sensor on an '87 truck that I doubt your '84 has. it is located behind the insturment cluster. You may have to get the '87 wiring harness and insturments too. Im not sure about this, my truck was origionaly equiped with a 4.3 TBI so i dont have to change anything. Also, all of the parts from the 4.3 are the same as the 350. The only difference is the distribuitor, injectors, ECM, and ESC. There is a way to wire around the EGR and AIR system too, I dont remember exactly how, I do remember it is very easy. If I find my notes ill post back. Mike |

Will sending units out of the donor truck transfer to my existing tanks or do I have to get the tanks off of the donor truck too?

O2 sensor is on the drivers side just below the exhaust manifold.
