Cutting the dash

There was an old thread on this subject. One guy had an aftermarket heater/air unit so he put the controls in the ashtray space and put his DIN stereo in the old heater control hole. Crutchfield makes an under dash mount that can be mounted upside down in the glove box. I did this on my son's '71 because it was all original. The remote control works, but the glovebox door has to be open. I have also cut the dashes in my other son's '67 and my wife's '63. It's your truck do what ever you want.

I guess i havent realized that this was still open. Some good pictures though. I did cut the dash and the center hole was just still too big so it peeks out a little but you have to be looking for it.

In my old 70 K20 I cut the dash and installed a cd player. The only problem was it rhode so rough the cd player was always skipping! LOL On my current longhorn project I am probabally going to cut it too. I can't stand the idea of having it in the glove box. But I have thought about building a console in front of the seat behind my shifter to place a cd player there. But who knows. LOL

for home stereos you can buy an adapter that allows you to keep the unit behind a cabinet (or in other room) and still use the remote. I wonder if it would work with a car stereo so you could leave it in the glove box (or under the seat) and just have the sensor near the dash, or where ever you want to point the remote?

Actually, I would like to leave the old stereo in the dash just to keep thieves from breaking in...

i had a jvc head unit put in my 67 and i went to nortin car audio and i went back and forth on cuting the dash so but i let them do it i was very happy with them so nortin can do it if u live in anderson sc or around there they can do it

It didn't bother me one bit. Cut it and forget it.

Heres A Thought I Have A Boat And They Make A Remote Unit For All The Controls It Mounts At The Back Of The Boat So You Can Turn It Up Or Down Or Change Station Or Cd Track Less Than 1 1/2" Wide Real Slick Little Unit Mount The Head Unit Any Where

I always find it hilarious that half the people who will tell you not to do it have modified their frame, or changed out the gauges, or tinted windows, or put on some '80's rims with BF Radial T/A's, or done a motor transplant, or converted to HEI, or switched carbs, or any number of things that make the truck "Not Original".

The only reason not to cut is if your truck is in mint condition, or restored back to 100% factory condition just as when it rolled off the assembly line. If it's a daily driver, I can't think of a reason NOT to have a cd player in it! Hmm...10 watts vs 200, AM vs AM/FM/CD/MP3/Satellite radio, 16 bit digital quality vs...ummm...none?

My truck isn't on the road yet, but as soon as it is roadworthy you can bet I will cut the dash in a heartbeat!

i didn't realize this before. i mean i was thinking i shouldn't cut the dash because of the value drop but you can bet that the suspension will be DROPPED!!! ....IM CUTTING THE DASH!! thanks!

Now that my friend is funny as heck. I bought mine for $400 so everybody cut their dash because I want it worth more.

i agree, just cut it unless you are planning on keeping it 100% original for show or something. i used a dremel tool w/ a cut off wheel. used two wheels, but worked great. easy to get into small places, and more precise than the sawzall!
