Sagging Headliner - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

When I bought my truck the headliner was in bad condition. It was stained, ripped and the only part that wasn't sagging was being held up by thumbtacks.
After being stabbed by the falling thumbtacks a few times I tore the loose material down and until yesterday I lived with just the ugly headliner shell.
Yesterday while out getting some materials for repairing my cracked dash I found a headliner repair kit made by Heads-up. For $30.00 you get the new foam backed material and for another $8.00 you get a spray can of their headliner adhesive.
Not too bad for less than $40.00 considering a new replacement headliner goes for $170.00.

Is the whole foam piece new? I have a headliner in my 73 that looks identical to yours except in color. I believe my truck did not come with a headliner from the factory and have always wondered what year it is from and if it is in factory a GM headliner or aftermarket. Mine is a big contoured foam piece like yours with the fabric glued to it I believe.

On the other hand, my 76 has a weird vinyl headliner that is factory and looks nothing like ours.

If anoyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it.

Nice job! That looks like it was done by a pro. I know you said the company's name is "Heads-Up", but where did you pick it up at? (Parts store)

looks good. mine kept falling...so i took a can of spray adhesive and went to town... that lasted maybe one summer.. i tend not to use my A/C in the summer, it has never worked totally right and would bog the engine too much....so more often than not.. i would just roll down my windows. but i guess with 100+ deg heat and the force of the wind coming in the window was too much for the headliner to take. tried fixing twice to no avail... so i took it out ....

40 bucks good deal, looks good, $170 seems really expensive we do these headliners for $65.

your headliner in the 76 most likely had the perforated (sp?) vinyl. thats normal some trucks came with that and you can still get that if you want it is available.

as far as your 73 I'm not sure if your saying that you dont have a board or if you have a different looking headliner, but as far as i know most of the headliners have a board. the material comes with the foam backing to it and then it is glued to the board. But i think Gchemist had his glued on to the ceiling of his truck without the board which is not a problem either.

Thanks everyone, I like the way it turned out too.

Pre-runner: I've tried using 3-M headliner tack sprays before to just fix my old headliners but never had any luck either. My neighbor has been using the Heads-up replacements on cars for a few years and has never had any complaints.

Big block: The new headliner cloth material was almost a perfect match to my old cloth and has a 3/8" foam backing. All I had to do was remove my old headliner, (remove all that $*&^ trim!). Then I removed the remainder of the loose material and scuffed the shell with a Scotchbrite pad, sprayed on the adhesive, laid in the new liner material, formed it into the contours and trimmed the edges with a razor blade. It only took about 5 minutes total to set the material into the shell. The whole job with trim removal and replacement took about 1 1/2 hours. These kits only come in the cloth as far as I know.

I got the kit and the adhesive at a local Auto Parts chain called Franks Auto Supermarket.

This was probably the nicest and easiest kit I've ever used.
Here's the colors and the name of the company that makes it.

I agree - looks great.

My headliner is currently sitting in my garage awaiting repair. But, I've had a number of people comment that they like the look of the interior without it. Me? Well I'm not sold on it yet and will likely be attempting a fix shortly.
