switching from 4X4 to 2wd

Ok winter is here again. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is better to switch out of 4wd once you get going and then back into 4wd when you need to take off again, or just leave in 4wd? thanks for any info, Glen

Re: switching from 4X4 to 2wd

Depends on:

1---If you are still in the mud or snow, leave it in 4x4 till you get to the road.
2---If the highway is snowpacked ( no asphalt showing ) leave it in 4x4

You definetely don't want to drive on dry asphalt for very long. Don't ever try to make a turn on the highway with it in 4x4.

Re: switching from 4X4 to 2wd

it's mostly for city driving. I leave for work just after 5pm during "rush hour" I have 2 stop signs and a some stop lights (right turn on reds) to get to work and it seems most of the corners are slick from people spinning when they take off, so I put it in 4wd to take off, I didn't know if it hurt to put it in 4wd to take off then back to 2wd once i was moving. thanks Glen

Re: switching from 4X4 to 2wd

If you are taliking about your 08 chevy it should have an auto feature that will engage the 4wd when it senses loss of traction. If not, then I would just engage it when you think you need it at these slick intersections/corners/turns, and take it back out before you reach a highway speed. Sometimes though, these newer 4x4's won't disengage until you let out of them.
