Venting ! ! !
So here's the deal:
I just got back from the tranny shop where I had brought our '92 Pathfinder to check transmission problem - delay into reverse. The problem is internal and will require a rebuild The bigger problem - besides the potential $2500 bill - is the fact that this happened almost exactly 4 years ago, and we rebuilt it then. Of course the shop does not warranty SUV's for longer than 1 year. They are giving me 25% off as a "Preferred Customer" - - duh, I guess, after this I'll have given them a pretty good piece of coin...It may sound strange, but despite the repeat performance, I still have quite a bit of trust in this shop. They have an excellent reputation and I have a lemon. So that's it. If we decide that we are keeping the vehicle (which we likely will), we'll be fixing it - - again. I guess I just have to start putting $500 away every year to afford another rebuild in 4 years. Thanks for listening. I guess one good thing about all of this is - - - - this is POST 100!!! |

In case any of you are wondering what my avatar is a picture of, I apologize, the small picture does not do the mod justice.
Last summer I painted the inside of my gauge housing with chrome to try and brighten the dashlights. The effect was dramatic. Mike (Swervin) was kind enough to post it on his website - thanks Mike - where you can see the "before" and "after" better, and get a description of what I did. http://www.73-87.com/garage/dashlights.htm So that's that . |

I think it's time to get it repaired and sell it. I say fix it first because you won't be able to anything out of it if you don't. 4 years just isn't enough time for me to even think about keeping it.

It's a great vehicle for travelling. For camping locally, we take the Chevy. But for longer distances, we remove the rear seats, throw on a car top carrier and drive. And according to a number of people who have seen this vehicle, they all say the engine is in great shape, despite it's mileage. And to be honest, it's been quite reliable, and since I do most mechanical work myself, it hasn't cost us that much (except for the tranny). So, we will obviously have to make some choices. I certainly appreciate and respect your advice. Thanks. |

We are going through the same thing with our '96 Dodge Ram. It screches in reverse and the RPM limiter work intermitantly. It is slipping and doesn't like to shift out of 1st. The shops around here are being d*cks about everything.

Have you thought about a used tranny?? Hopefully it will work better if and when it ever gets warmer. What ever happened to global warming and El Nino??

I agree try to find a used tranny and sell it off. Should be cheaper and save some $$$ for a new truck.

Here's the latest in my saga... I did a little more calling around (remember quoted prices are Canadian - US equivalent is approx 2/3). A used tranny with approx. 150K miles = $1150 + installation A used tranny with approx. 80K miles = $1425 + installation So I called the Nissan Dealer to get the price of a Factory rebuilt unit - $2500 - I was shocked. I expected it to be much more. I asked the parts guy if these trannys have problems. He says "Nope, just the reverse seal..." Well duh, that's been my problem twice now. So he quotes me approx. $1400 to install a new seal kit. 1 yr/20,000km warranty. So my question is: Why has Nissan not addressed this problem and developed a better seal???? I think I'm leaning towards getting the dealer to replace the seals for $1400. I love my !!!!! |
