Post speedometer question

I've got an '86 GMC that was making a horrible clicking sound. I changed the speedometer cable, and the noise stopped. So i figured all is well. Now, i only get a clicking sound when it really cold out and i am above 70 km/h (about 45 mph). Once the truck warms up completely, the noise stops. I only changed the long cable from the speedomteter, not the short one that threads into the tranny. Should i change the short one? Should i have greased the new cable?
What did i do wrong?

I would remove both cables and squirt some heacy oil in there and see what happens.

I had a similiar problem. I removed the two piece cable and installed a single type cable from the speed to the tranny. I took out the rotating cable and greased it really light with some wheel bearing grease. My speed over reads when its cold but quickly drops to normal operation after a few miles.

Hey I had the same problem in my 87 Burb I let it squeek for a couple of weeks then one cold day it was super loud it just started to spin in circles . When I took it apart I found there is a spring behind the needle that was all twisted up Ended up going down to the wreckers getting a whole spedo form a 85 and put the odometer form the burb which reads 426000 into the speedo from the 85 Oh the needle wil break the shaft off really easy trust me I did it putting it back together! Down to the wreckers to get another one ! All good now I am from around
