K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

This one is from a Blazer, but there's also one on my K-10 & K-20, see pics. Can anyone explain the purpose, and why only installed on LH side at the rear of the leaf spring? Most 4x4 frames have the two mounting holes there already? Anyway this is an extra if yours is missing, $25 shipped.

There should be a cage on the front of the leaf spring also. (drivers side) I believe these were in case the leaf spring broke it would not send you in to on-coming traffic. Just kept things in place basically. TTT for ya...

They didn't have them on 68's but I might be interested if all the parts are there...

Re: K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

I have a NOS kit with instructions stashed somewhere as I believe they were in a recall around 1971 after GM was forced to install them due to some people getting killed by a spring run up through the floorboard and into the driver on a head on collision. I guess they must of negotiated the drivers side only expense as it was more prone to a head on on the driver side with the other on coming lane. The recall kit includes the bottom leaf with a curled leading end and the cage strap to be welded to the front eyelet and that bolt on rear piece you have pictured above.

I have two of these kits. Did they pertain to the 72'S as well?

Re: K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

Mike
They became a production line standard on the 72's and maybe part of the 71's. All my 72's have always had them anyway. I remember looking at those install instructions in that kit and I thought it was dated in early 71. It may have also said it was for the 1970 up installation. Mark

Hotfun, that sounds right & makes sense. There is a piece welded on the front LS. I'll get some pics, and look at the '71 & '72 to see if they are the same. If you come across the nos pieces, could you email or post some pics?

Re: K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

i had a 71 shortbed 4x4 that had them on both sides--only one i have ever seen with one on both sides. the frame also had no VIN stamped into it anywhere and the cab had floor damage like maybe it was in a bad accident and a replacement frame put under it.

I'll try and get to that kit this weekend out in the shop. I remember it gave welding instructions for that front strap too. Mark

Hotfun,
Your right-on. All three trucks have a strap welded to the left front spring. Looks like a plain piece of stock welded in. Interesting, you learn something new everyday around here. I'll get pics this weekend.

Re: K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

OK. Pretty bored this AM with the wife watching the Macy's Parade and asking me to watch it also (is that paint dry?). Anyway went out to the garage and took some pics. Campaign # 1012 is written on the box and the instructs say for 67-71. I need to look at my 72. GM part # 1 # 325077

I take that back, the instructs do not say 67-71. 67-71 is handwritten on the box. The date on the instructs is 8-13-71 & 8-16-71.

Re: K-5, 10, 20 LH front shackle guard?

That's what I have except my kit came with a full bottom spring with a curled leading edge. I know the 72 frame I am working on right now has factory drilled holes on both rails behind the rear spring shackle for those stop brackets but I have never seen one mounted on the RH side. Thanks Mike for getting the picture as I believe mine is buried in that cab of the smashed 72 ochre 4x4 Short box. Mark
