60-66's in the military
Was the US military using chev or gmc trucks from 60-66?
I don't know if I have ever seen an olivedrab, or camo 60-66. I have seen a few 55-59, and there are a ton of 73-87's around here. I have seen a few 60-66 forest service vehicles. Post up any pics of military, forest service, fire, telephone, or other service vehicles if you have them. |

Re: 60-66's in the military
Most of the military trucks i've seen from that era, were Econolines.
Like the "HAMB Bomb" and another recent build on a former USN Econoline pickup.

Re: 60-66's in the military
I don't have concrete evidence, but I had a conversation with a guy checking out my '63. Mine was assembled in Atlanta (factory demolished long ago), and this guy worked there in 1963. He was surprised mine was not a military truck, as most of the ones he worked on were.

Re: 60-66's in the military
When I was MCAS-H Tustin, the Fire Department had a 67 1/2 ton stepside
4wd with a six and a 3spd on the column. It was red though not OD. |

My Burb is an ex-State of California truck.
It's white, and utterly bare bones, with 3/4 ton springs and radiator, factory posi, and 17.5 bias plys. Has the 80/20 split bench, too. |

I think the one we had in the Forest Service had a rear locker and those size wheels too. They were big tall skinny tires. It had a factory tow hook on the front too! The six may have been a 292, I really did not pay that much attention to it because it was not a 4x4. I'd love to have it today though! |

Sounds like mine, sans tow-hook.
However, modifications are in the making... |

Re: 60-66's in the military
Prior to the 80's the armed services did not use alot of civilian vehicles. They had some but the big switch was a cost saving idea they had to use more standard trucks instead of everything built to MIL specs. I remeber reading an article back then. Seems like the Air Force had the most prior to the 80's

Re: 60-66's in the military
I've got a 64,C-30 out back that was a state vehicle(yellow)with the 17.5 skinny tires on it.
Also,I saw a huge G.M.C. truck with the 702 V-12,that is a govt. truck. It was hauling one of those big missiles back in the early 60's. Maybe on Jolley's site. http://www.6066gmcguy.org/ Mike. |

Re: 60-66's in the military
Take a look at my avatar. That was a 1972 Chevy truck that was an Army Fleet truck that was sold to the Airforce and Repainted.
Lots of 60-66 ambulances, I have seen quite a few. I will try and scower for some pics.
