Is there a way?

To read the computer error codes from an '84 Silverado truck?

I remember with my '86 pontiac you could do this buy jumpering the 'check' plug with a paperclip or something, then simply turn on the ignition and the error codes would flash at the check engine light.

Anyone have any infomation on this, or is it impossible to do without the proper diagnostic tools?

Well a shop can read the codes on the engine ECU. I know because I was standing right there when he did it. However he was using one of those code scanning machines from GM. I simply needed to know if the system could be jumpered to display the codes.

It's not the basic ECU obviously, or else it would not have been able to display codes at the carb. shop.

I guess I'll just have to give it a go and see what I can break.

Well figured out what it is.. it's an 84 body but the engine is from somewhere else. It difinately has an ECU that gives feedback however or else jumpering would not have given the 1-2 flashes on the check engine light.

Not really sure what my buddy has here, certaintly a PITA truck.

Thanks anyways, guys.
