Wavy Rear Window?
I noticed when I bought my truck that my rear window was kinda hard to see out of, upon further inspection the glass is wavy. You can physically feel the ripples. It's not consistent at all so I figure its a defect, I believe the rear cab seam was welded at one point, is it possible that they heat warped the glass?
More importantly do you think it's a hazard of any sort? It feels solid but I'm not sure how badly the structural integrity may have been affected. I just don't want it blowing up into the back of my head some day. Thanks. |

Re: Wavy Rear Window?
You can warp the glass with enough heat. It's no more fragile than it was beforem should be fine. I have an antique painting framed in the original frame and glass from around 1900 that had survived a house fire in 1925, and the glass is visibly melted and warped. It gives it character, however, a wavy truck window is not character, just annoying. Is it a solid or slider? I have an extra slider sitting around.

Re: Wavy Rear Window?
more than likely it's just a cheap aftermarket glass. I've put quite a few solid black glasses into trucks to get rid of crappy sliders, and all but one of them has been a cheap aftermarket glass, all but one were wavy, just something you're going to have to deal with until you get tired of it and foot the cash for a nice one...

It's solid, didn't even know they had sliders back then. I wasn't paying much attention to it but today when I got home I looked at it and it's got a blue tint to it too.

Re: Wavy Rear Window?
Maybe a stupid question, but are you sure the window is actually glass and not plexiglass?

Glass may look solid but if still flows like a liquid only slower. Old windows in old houses will be thicker at the bottom than the top. I think tempered glass will be keep it's shape better than non-tempered but it could still change shape a little. Also, it may have been manufactured that way.

Re: Wavy Rear Window?
Should be some good used ones around, shipping is the problem. I have one, but packing it up and shipping would likely be more than it is worth.
Welding close to the window would have burnt the rubber, glass would likely have been removed before any repairs were made. Factory glass was either clear or a light green tint. If yours is blue, I would check real close for tint film being applied or a poor replacement. Are the ripples on one side only ? If ripples are on both sides, suspect the glass, else if the are only on one side, might just have bad tint film applied.
