Retiring the DD
Well guys, it's a sad day, but I'm finally going to be putting my daily driver '91 suburban out to pasture. I've been driving it 50+ miles a day for over 2-1/2 years now to go back and forth to work. I've toughed it out as long as I could, but I finally picked up a new ride for daily commuting that will be a little easier on the pocket book. This brings the stable count up to 4, but hey, there's still room for more. My plan is to fix the odds and ends on the burb that I've neglected over the last few years, but I haven't decided if I'll keep it or not. If I sell it I could definitely pay for the paint on the '78, but I'm not even close to that stage yet.
Anyway, I picked up a '01 Jetta TDI. This will be the 3rd VW for our household, and 1 of 2 currently. My work commute should only use about a gallon of gas per day. I I've done the math right, the car will actually pay for itself just in fuel savings alone, with all the nice modern perks. Last edited by smashingchuck; 01-09-2009 at 12:50 PM. |

Re: Retiring the DD
sounds good man! You gonna do anything with it? I love my truck but I also have a focus too. I just drive the truck when I want to. But since I got it all painted up I haven't driven the car in 2 months now...lol but I will again eventually.

Re: Retiring the DD
with the car? Change the oil.... and smile every time I pass a gas station. I really don't like to modify the newer high tech stuff. Seems like the aftermarket add ons always cause premature failure.

Re: Retiring the DD
Sorry, Meant the burban. You gonna keep it for later or parts or just get rid of it.
I know what you mean about the newer stuff. I've had my focus since '02 and I haven't done anything to it. |

Re: Retiring the DD
I've been wanting one of those Jetta TDIs forever now. There's a lot of little tips and tricks with them, and a devoted group of followers at tdiclub.com
I can't really justify getting one over my beater Civic, since gas is cheaper than diesel (at least around here) and the civic already gets 35-38 MPG

i had an 01 Jetta 1.8 turbo w/5 speed(used to love that car other than a few probs. here and their), and it caught on fire a year after i bought it while i was driving it down the freeway. ive also heard lots of bad things about them. and i took good care of it while i had it. but for the deisel ones ive never heard anything bad about them as of yet.

Re: Retiring the DD
thanks 78 Chevyrado.
l liked it, but had alot of problems with it. had to do the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. within the first couple months i had it. then the tranny and starter started making wierd noises, then after that the 300 dollar fuel pump started acting up(sometimes it wouldnt work). then it caught on fire(engine compartment) while driving. heres a pic of it when i first got it Last edited by project 67 sub; 01-10-2009 at 01:20 AM. |
