new frame?
Has anyone ever replaced the entire frame with one from a newer model? Is it even possible? I have 2 options an '81 or a '91. I planned on taking parts from one or both for a 5 lug disk upgrade on my 68 LWB. Could I just use the entire Frame? I understand there would be some fab involved, body mounts, bumper mounts etc. Other than that how do they line up as far as length, width, height. Any ideas are appreciated

Re: new frame?
Why would you? You can add disc brakes to your frame a lot easier than what you are asking about.
A lot more trouble than its worth.

There's a guy in the projects section putting one on a 1990 1 ton 4x4 dually frame. It's gonna be SWEEEEEET!

Re: new frame?
I have the donors available, and I plan a frame off anyway. I figured if the frames are nearly identical, all I have to do is some fab work it would save me some time, and I could upgrade to disk and 5 lug at the same time. Rather than pulling the parts of one frame just to put them right back on. Plus I could still drive my truck while I am shining up the new frame.

Re: new frame?
The wheelbase will be shorter on the 68. But the new can be shortened.

Re: new frame?
if it is a 2 wheel drive, then stop thinking about it. You need a flat frame.
If it is a 4X4, then you can trim the frame down, relocate the rear axle forward and then build a custom made body lift to raise the cab to the height of the bed. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 01-30-2009 at 10:24 PM. |

Re: new frame?
I think i would just install the '81 front crossmember and rear-end on the '68... good luck with whatever direction you decide to go.
