Oil Gauge Problem
My Oil Gauge (84 305) hasn't been working for a while, it used to peg at 60 and when I turned the key on go to 0 and then back all the way to 60+, so I thought it was the pressure switch (bell shaped by the distributor). I replaced the pressure switch today and now the gauge just stays at 60+(pegged) always no matter what, I checked the wire and it seems fine, any other ideas on what could be wrong? Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My guess (guessing cause I don't know how that switch is wired) is that you either have an open circuit or a short circuit to ground. Disconnect the wire and see what the gauge does. You may also have an incorrect/faulty new part.

GM pressure gages and temp gages, open circut = 0 psi or temp. Grounded = max reading+. Fuel gagesn are reversed. Open circut, max reading+ and grounded = empty. It wouold seem to me that the fact that frisco's gage changed what it was doing, even if it's incorrect would tell me the sender and wire are ok, but only to a point. Gage wire could be grounded inside the cab. The gage itself OR the resistor block on the gage could be bad, printed circut or connector plug on the dash could also be a problem. Check everything you can with an ohm meter with the key OFF or battery disconnected. jim

Did you disconnect the wire and see what happened?

you could always get a aftermarket oil gauge from any parts store and mount under the dash or in the factory position

Sorry for the late reply, I finally was able to check what would happen with the wire connector pulled off the sending unit, the results were the same i.e. the gauge is pegged at 60 now....any ideas on what else to check?

Sounds like your wire is grounded, could it be pinched under the valvecover or
something else? |

Yep. Sounds like your wire is grounded or your gauge is bad.
